Trains in the Columbia River Gorge, September 2016, Part 5
Author: Rainier_Rails

Here's the next part in this series, consisting of photos taken on Thursday 9/15, starting on the Oregon side (UP Portland Sub) at Viento State Park, and then moving over to the Washington side (BNSF Fallbridge Sub) west of Lyle, WA, specifically the Chamberlain Lake Rest Area on State Route 14, which is located directly above Tunnel #8, with views of Tunnels #7 & #9.  Here's a link to the previous Part 4: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4197094.  And here's a link to the following Part 6: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4199391

1) 9:38 AM: things were quite busy across the River on the Fallbridge Sub, necessitating the dispatcher placing 2 trains in Cooks siding.  Specifically, an eastbound manifest with a C44-9W, SD40-2, C44-9W power sandwich (#689, #1685*, #660) was first on the scene at 8:55 AM, and came to a stop on the main to await the arrival at 9:10 AM of a westbound loaded grain unit (with ES44C4 #7144 in the lead, along with C44-9W #4180, and ES44C4 #8076 on the back), which was the first train to pull into the siding and stop.  Next at 9:29 AM came a westbound local (consisting of 6 empty center spine lumber cars), with GP38-2 #2276* in the lead, along with GP39E #2752*, which pulled into the siding directly behind the grain unit.  With all 3 trains stopped on the BNSF side, back over on the UP side at 9:37 AM came an eastbound manifest, the MLVHK-14, led by SD70M #4093, along with fellow SD70M #4453.  Therefore, there are 4 trains in this picture: the UP eastbound manifest, and all 3 trains on the BNSF, with tank cars in that eastbound manifest located behind the 2 engines on the westbound local, and with the DPU of the grain unit (#8076) semi-hidden behind a Douglas Fir.  At about 9:38 AM, the eastbound manifest on the BNSF side got back underway.  Next at 9:50 AM on the UP came 2 eastbound (almost brand new) light engines, C45AH (ET44AC-H) #2593 and SD70ACe-T4CU (Tier 4 Credit Unit) #9020; these 2 later headed back westbound at 1:49 PM with a train of maintenance-of-way gondolas (running in both directions as the WALALO-15).  Over on the BNSF at 9:56 AM came an eastbound loaded garbage unit, with ET44C4 #3827 in the lead, along with C44-9W #4430.  Then at 10:06 AM, the westbound local backed out (eastbound) of the siding onto the main, and got back underway (westbound) at 10:11 AM.  The westbound grain unit, however, did not get back underway until around 12:15 PM.

*SD40-2 #1685 was built in April 1973 as BN #6354, was later renumbered to #6814, to BNSF #6814, to #1685.  GP38-2 #2276 was built in August 1973 as Frisco #421, to BN #2276, to BNSF #2276.  GP39E #2752 was built in August 1962 as SOU GP30 #2532, to NS #2532, rebuilt by EMD in October 1991 as BN GP39E #2762, to BNSF #2752.

2) 9:50 AM: a view of the #2593, 1 of the 2 eastbound light engines.

3) 4:14 PM: over on the Washington side at Lyle siding (located east of the town of Lyle, which also has a small yard), was a westbound manifest, led by ES44C4 #8236, along with CN C44-9W #2614, CN C40-8W #2162 (nee-AT&SF #801), and C44-9W's #4432 and #5482.  After arriving at the Chamberlain Lake Rest Area west of Lyle above Tunnel #8, this manifest came through at 4:45 PM.

Next Three:

4) 4:58 PM: following the westbound manifest was a westbound empty TOFC (baretable) unit, led by C44-9W #4136, along with fellow C44-9W #4036, with #4136 seen here exiting the west portal of Tunnel #9.

5) 4:58 PM: a view of the #4036 about to enter the east portal of Tunnel #8.

6) 5:23 PM: looking east up the Gorge towards the relatively flat area on the Washington side opposite The Dalles, OR (center far background) through the Rowena Gap (center background).  In front of and to the left of the Rowena Gap is the town of Lyle.  The boat seen on the right coming downriver is Un-Cruise Adventures' S.S. Legacy.

Last Three:

7) 5:24 PM: looking across the River to the Oregon side, the sheer size of the cliffs above Interstate 84 and the UP Portland Sub becomes obvious.

8) 6:35 PM: moving from the east side of the Rest Area overlooking Tunnel #9, to the west side of the Rest Area overlooking Tunnel #7, we see the eastbound #28 Empire Builder exiting the east portal of said tunnel, led by P42DC #153.

9) 6:36 PM: a view of the Empire Builder's consist for this day.

That's it for now.  More tomorrow.
