My first night chase (in a while)
Author: wesleygreer

Last night I happened to see UP's nightly Denver - Pueblo manifest, the MNYPU, departing Denver, and I decided to give chase down the Joint Line. The conditions were perfect for night-time lighting, with the moon being present and a fair bit of snow still on the ground.
  • One of the benefits of shooting at night is that many locations that would be unshootable during the day due to bad lighting are now fair game, for example this spot north of Sedalia, a location I've never even considered shooting from during the day. In this shot, a BNSF manifest led by BNSF 8032 and 3856 rolls north.
  • At 1:12am, the MNYPU streaks past one of the dwindling number of ex-Rio Grande searchlights left on the Joint Line at Sedalia.
  • A shot I've wanted to try for a while, the MNYPU now rounds the curve passing Castle Rock.

  • South of Tomah Rd.
  • Crossing the ex-ATSF bridge at Larkspur.
  • The train had to wait at the Sag for a northbound BNSF coal empty, which allowed me time to get a few stationary shots of it.

  • The northbound empty streaks by on its downhill run to Denver. Lighting courtesy of the moon.
  • Back on the move climbing out of Spruce.
  • At exactly 3:00am, the train hit the summit at Palmer Lake (serious lense flare, but it doesn't look too bad). After this it was time to head home and hit the sack!

Woah! I've never seen timed exposures on the Joint Line. I like the brigde one!

Nice job, Wes! I was wondering why you were posting nighttime MNYPU sightings!
