Western Railroad Discussion > Cold day at CiscoDate: 01/20/17 15:03 Cold day at Cisco Author: JamesSchlinger A couple of us hiked up to Cisco last weekend for some shots of UP operations on the Hill. It was a bit chilly in the shade, but UP did not disappoint! Here is a detouring MNPRV exiting tunnel 39 at Cisco.

Chilly for sure but a fun day at Cisco. Nice shot, James. Ryan Date: 01/20/17 15:24 Re: Cold day at Cisco Author: JamesSchlinger Nope! Unlike some I know, I always get gas the night before...

Date: 01/20/17 19:23 Re: Cold day at Cisco Author: GeneL Okay, dumb question here. With an id of MNPRV why is it detouring? Wouldn't a North Platte to Roseville train normally go over Donner Pass?
Date: 01/20/17 19:40 Re: Cold day at Cisco Author: WP3545 All of our heavy westbound trains go through the FRC normally.
Date: 01/20/17 20:22 Re: Cold day at Cisco Author: JamesSchlinger Westbound manifests are typically routed via the Feather River Canyon. The exception is the MRORV that has work in Sparks and thus runs Donner. As to this particular MNPRV, the FRC was suffering from washouts above Clio and near Tobin, shutting the line down for several days and forcing all UP trains to take Donner.

Wouldn't a > North Platte to Roseville train normally go over > Donner Pass? Add to James's comments, MNPRV and MNPRVB both ran Feather River Canyon (FRC) regularly for several years. Eastbounds (QRVNPP, MRVNP, and their variants) usually go Donner. MNPRVB is no more, but MNPRV still run FRC normally. Before the tunnel work to migrate the stackers from FRC to Donner in 2009, many of the manifests, including the westbound North Plattes, ran Donner... so maybe that's what you're remembering? And James, thanks for the photo of a nice bright day at Cisco. Date: 01/21/17 09:36 Re: Cold day at Cisco Author: sp1827ml James,
You have become one of the masters of train photography in the snow!! Thanks for another awesome image!! Mark Sparks, NV Date: 01/21/17 12:31 Re: Cold day at Cisco Author: JamesSchlinger I appreciate the kind words Mark. But photography is much easier these days with digital cameras than it was in the past, so I don't even consider myself close to the true masters such as Stein and Dick Dorn. They were/are the masters! Really, it's all just a hobby and great fun for me, as I have been going to the mountains my whole life but only in the past 10 years become interested in photography.

From looking at the map, walking down from the lakes and the public land looked to be the best.
