Holloman AFB
Author: ATSF2324

The rail line into Historic Holloman AFB has been ripped up.
Just think...  How may parts of our military secrets were transported on those rails at one time.
Remember "Ham"?  He was named after "Holloman Areo Medical". Also part of the missle heritage of this area.

Anybody know what happened to "TED-RED- OGDEN" in Utah? We used to get all kinds of engines and complete trains from them in the late 60s. (Army-Air Force- Navy- Etc.)
Everything was covered in that "Grease" to preserve them.

Do they still have "Stuff" ?

Located at Hill AFB in Ogden, UT are the Army's Rail Shops, in the past, they were under the nearest Army Base which was the Tooele Army Depot , in Tooele, UT
So Army & Air Force RR equipment gets marked with TEAD==Tooele Army Depot
The Rail Shops at Hill Field are still Busy, However, Hill AFB , no longer operates it's own RR

I thought that was China Lake Naval Station which had/has several sled tracks.
It's RR long gone also (SP Lone Pine branch)

When was the last time you saw a USAF locomotive or rolling stock? USAF has hardly used rail in the last 30 years, maybe a handful of bases and labs might still be connected.

When I was in the USAF at Edwards AFB in 1962 there was a rocket-sled track at Edwards and one at Holloman.

The USAF still has a RR at Beale AFB, CA and Ankorage, Alaska
On April 15th 1993, I took this photo at The Rail Shops at Hill AFB  Ogden , UT

Lackland AFB on San Antonio's west side had a branch from the Sunset Route at at point called Cadet, Texas.
I hiked it back in 1963 when I was in Basic Training there.
Does it still operate?

The one the Mythbusters used belongs to New Mexico Tech and is in the mountains west of Socorro.  Holloman AFB is quite a ways to the south and east near Alamogordo, NM.

Clear Air Force Site (Clear AK), Eielson AFB AFB (Fairbanks AK) and Beale AFB (Yuba City CA) still have active Air Force Railroads.

I was stationed at Holloman and got to see the test sled launch a few times.  Twice from the range safety helicopter.

When did Pope AFB stop receiving fuel by rail?
