Western Railroad Discussion > Familiarizing Myself With the EMD Tier 4 in IndioDate: 02/20/17 20:21 Familiarizing Myself With the EMD Tier 4 in Indio Author: suvart Yesterday while camping along the Salton sea the El Centro hauler rolled by in the dark headed towards Colton, with Union Pacific's two tier 4 SD70ACes in consist. These units have been spending the last few weeks bad ordered in various yards in CA (3014 in Colton and 3012 in Roseville), and supposedly this was a sort of test run for them. So I was surprised to wake up and find out only UP 3012 had made it to Colton. I headed to Indio, figuring 3014 had been set out, and sure enough It was there. As a bonus a crew was hooking up two other units to it and appeared to be getting ready to work around the yard, so I decided to use this as an opportunity to see the engine in action.
Note: you may want to turn your volume up for the first part of the video. It was taken on my phone from across the yard, so hearing the new Caterpillar/EMD 4 stroke prime mover fire up may be a bit difficult. Travus Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/21/17 08:58 by suvart. The puffy white clouds and palm trees are refreshing after all this rain. Unfortunately, the unit doesn't have much sound to it, other than an older MCI bus idling. Hopefully future GE's will continue to have some sound.
Thanks for the video. Date: 02/20/17 23:51 Re: Familiarizing Myself With the EMD Tier 4 in Indio Author: greshe3 One of my favorite train watching locations when i get down that way , date shake is also a must lol .thanks for sharing .Greg

Date: 02/21/17 08:58 Re: Familiarizing Myself With the EMD Tier 4 in Indio Author: Grand87 12-cylinder, four-stroke EMD-developed 1010 diesel engine. EMD isn’t providing many technical details of how it attained Tier 4, only saying that it has done this without the use of urea as an aftertreatment. The 1010 is a radical departure from EMD’s traditional two-stroke engine, which traces its roots to the circa-1939 567, 645 and 710 series engines that immediately preceded it. It is not based on a Caterpillar engine, though, according to Progress Rail President and CEO Billy Ainsworth, it “combines the engineering expertise of Progress Rail, Electro-Motive and Caterpillar.” EMD is a wholly owned subsidiary of Progress Rail Services Corp., a Caterpillar company. EMD’s other Tier 4 offering, the F125 Spirit high-speed passenger locomotive, utilizes a 4,700-hp Caterpillar C175-20 engine.

True, but that 12 cylinder "EMD" 4-stroke engine is STILL a derivative of the previously named "H engine", which was available in both 12 and 16 cylinder versions. The current marketing folks at Progress Rail no longer refer to the 4-stroke as an "H", nor a "265". The current engine model number, has no relation to cubic inch displacement, nor bore, nor stroke. Date: 02/21/17 09:41 Re: Familiarizing Myself With the EMD Tier 4 in Indio Author: exhaustED No, not the same engine. 'The 1010 is an all-new design, developed with the expertise of EMD, Caterpillar and progress rail engineers'. There is a link to the old 265H but it's not the same! No way that engine from the '90's would pass tier 4...

I know quite a few crew members that would welcome a quiet running motor. Need to remember the crew could care less about how the fans like to hear the roar of a motor starting up and running. Date: 02/21/17 09:50 Re: Familiarizing Myself With the EMD Tier 4 in Indio Author: KDC The C-175 Cat and the 1010J3 Emd do have the cross-port heads in common and I would think that the block would have been tweaked a little since the 265 first came out. No telling what else has been improved upon. I sure would like to know.

Never realized that the traction MOTORS ever made THAT much noise, especially the AC traction MOTORS. Now, a quieter running diesel ENGINE would be nice.
