MILW Lines with CTC
Author: Northern

Of all of the Milwaukee Road's lines, which ones had CTC?  The Omaha line did, but were there any others.  What kind of a signal system did they have on the PCE; many pictures from there show signals in them (see below links).

Laredo - KC (where it wasn't double track)
La Crescent - St. Paul (where it wasn't double track)
Through the tunnel on the main in Wisconsin, rest was double track
Minneapolis - Aberdeen (where it wasn't double track)
Poor man's CTC (control signals but manual switches) west of Aberdeen most of the way to Mobridge and Rhame - Marmarth.

(I would have to dig out my timecards to give you the exact limits.)

No CTC on the PCE west of Marmarth until 1977 when it was put in between Black River and Tacoma Jct. Paid for UP but standard Milw Rd hardware.

Best regards,

CTC on "Short Line" between St Paul Union Depot and "Cedar", at Cedar Ave in South Minneapolis.  In final years Chestnut Street tower controlled all this, but earlier a CTC machine at South Minneapolis controlled the western half.

PCE was mostly APB, with some Manual Block on branches, but I'm not sure that lasted until the end.

MILW installed CTC btwn Tacoma Jct and Black River Jct (just south of Seattle) a couple years prior to it's demise.  The machine was located in the Coast Division (later Washinton Divn)  chief dispatchers office at the freight house on "D" street.

Watertown and New Lisbon, Wisconsin, had short stretches of CTC.

Is the entire line from Chicago to Minneapolis CTC now?  If so, when was that done?  Does the double track also remain or was it all converted single track with sidings?  Was any of the MILW CTC between La Crescent and Savanna?  Does any of the CTC on the Bensonville and Savanna remain in use today?

Yes.

Most of it sometime after bankruptcy.

Most of the double track is gone.

No, dark territory except at junctions and where sharing track with the trans-Iowa main.

Before bankruptcy, it was all double track. Single-track CTC later.
