Western Railroad Discussion > Sierra at Canyon Tank

The Sierra Railroad has always been of special interest for me. Back when I was a kid, I always saw the Sierra trackage along Highway 108 as my family traveled up to our cabin in Mi Wuk Village. Then just after high school, I became a shareholder in the Sierra. For awhile it has been a goal of mine to photograph the remote section of trackage between Cooperstown and Keystone. Last Tuesday, I decided to to head out and see what I could capture. 

With little knowledge on the whereabouts of the Fassler Flyer (Oakdale to Sonora train), I headed out on a four mile hike to Canyon Tank. I arrived just after 1pm and began waiting for the faint sound of a westbound train. Approximately 3.5 hours later, SERA 50 came into view.

With 9 cars headed down the hill, the Sierra Northern Fassler Flyer gently descends the Oakdale Branch at Canyon Tank. Quigley Creek has given life to this little valley with abundent wildflowers and the sound of frogs playing in the shallow water.

Well worth the hike. Its operation like this that might not be around forever. You can always catch the UP on Donner but a shot like yours is special.
