todays maiden trip for the saugus local

After missing yesterdays test train on the new crossing at buena vista st in burbank ca, I decided to catch the saugus locals maiden run north ,today, on the new trackage. It sure gave the two units alittle workout.

Dang...change the name on the street signs and those scenes could pass for the stretch of Valley Blvd through City of Industry (sort of) where the SP/UP had to raise the tracks to clear congested grade crossings, part of the ACE project.

Completely transformed the entire area.   The 5 also looks entirely different.    Big stuff for a changing city!

This train reported he had 7 loads and 2 empties out of Gemco. The shoving platform accounts for one empty and since I am unaware of any of the places this train serves generating loads, is the other empty the covered hopper and is it serving as a buffer due to the hazardous DWP tanks?

Same basic design was used on the Vineyard Ave grade seperation in Ontario, CA. Seems to be a standard design.

I suspect the tankcars may have been going to HASA in Saugus. According to their website, they make sodium hypochlorite. Perhaps one of the tankcars was an empty NaClO tankcar.

Can not wait until they start the destruction of Burbank Blvd bridge. They also are going to re design the Victory/Burbank/Costco road intersection. This will be fun.....

The hopper is a buffer. One or two tanks may be going to DWP/MWD but HASA gets cars every day so they may all be going there. The boxcars are going to ether Weyerhaeuser in Via Princessa or Phillips Plywood in Pacoima or one in each. There are no loads generated on the job.

The grade was designed to be no more than a train will encounter going to and through the San Fernando tunnel, about 1.4% IIRC.
