Wrapping up my Spring Break (Day 2): Cruising Through the Valley
Author: z-trains

The next morning, my dad and I woke up in Bakersfield, California, at the southern end of the central valley, with the plan of getting up to Brentwood California by the end of the day. Before the day was over, we had caught a number of unique operations, shortlines, and mainline power along both the UP and BNSF lines through the valley, so without further ado, here are the photos!
  • A southbound manifest train on the BNSF Bakersfield Subdivision heads through one of the refeinery complexes located west of the downtown area, as it heads for Bakersfield Yard and ultimately Barstow. An executive SD70MAC trails.
  • A few minutes later and a few miles ahead at Jastro, California, a southbound grainer passes by on the far track behind a trio of GE's, with a rebuilt AC44c4M second out.
  • After the grain train passed, a northbound Amtrak San Joaquin service train heads up out of the refinery area.

  • As we headed out of Bakersfield, a SJVRR train for Oil City was lined up out fo the BNSF yard and headed north towards some industries along the line. We intercepted it at the highway 58 grade crossing, powered by a ratty pair of EMD's
  • South of Shafter, California, a southbound pig train accelerates out of the siding behind a brace of GE's
  • Just south of Wasco, California, another southbound intermodal, this time empty flats, powers through town with an SD70ACe leading.

  • Now north of Wasco, yet another southbound intermodal train behind another SD70ACe passes by stored baretable cars at the north end of town.
  • At Elmo, California, a southbound manifest takes the siding for a northbound BARPAS
  • Just south of Allensworth, California, an Amtrak train passes by a ditch full of water as it heads for Bakersfield

  • Another southbound Amtrak train, this time the low level Comet set, passes south of Guernsey, California.
  • In Modesto, California, a northbound manifest heading to Roseville out of Fresno Yard passes over the Tuolumne River Bridge.
That's all for now! I'll post tomorrow about the shortline action we got, as well as any trains we caught today~

Cheers,
