Surviving Big Roundhouses & Turntables
Author: zephyrus

Anyone know how many big roundhouses (say 5 stalls or more, 100' deep) and/or turntables over 100' long survive in North America?

WHo owns them, what condition are they currently in. Can include turntables that have been lifted but still survive as well.

In California/Nevada, I know of a couple:

Redondo turntable - LA, ex-ATSF now Amtrak, 120' (roundhouse demolished 2000)

Stockton turntable - ex-WP now UP, 110'

Bayshore Roundhouse - South SF, ex-SP now UP, turntable gone? building in bad shape, 12 stalls?

Oroville turntable - Virginia City, NV, ex-WP now owned by FRRS, 110', stored out of ground

Can anyone add to the list?

Thanks.

Eugene

Interbay Roundhouse in Seattle, WA. Roundhouse and turntable still used daily. Here is the Pacific Pride unit on the turntable in 1990. The roundhouse has had a facelift since this picture was taken.

UP's Cheyenne Roundhouse and turnable looks to be in operation as well as still turning and housing steamers.

There are two turtables in Washington State that I know of. Interbay, Washington and Pasco, Washington, both have turntables, but I am not sure if they are over 100 ft. I would assume so, considering that the original owners GN and NP had very large steam engines, like the R-2 2-8-8-2s and Yellowstones.

CNW6500 posted an impressive list - he must have been waiting a long time for someone to ask this question!

The GN Minneapolis Jct Roundhouse and TT are gone. The TT is now installed at the former GN Jackson Street (St Paul) roundhouse and used daily by Minnesota Transportation Museum.

Milwaukee's St Paul (Pigs Eye) roundhouse and TT are used daily by General Electric's GETS locomotive servicing.

Also in daily use in St Paul is Minnesota Commercials roundhouse and TT, though it's a small TT - 90 feet, I think.

Milwaukees Wabasha, MN roundhouse is still standing, but no TT

Milwaukees Harlowton, Montana roundhouse is still standing, but no TT.

The former ATSF roundhouse in Las Vegas, NM should still be there; no turntable or pit, but it has 30 or more stalls, I believe.

Sorry to disappoint but, no I have not been waiting for someone to ask this question. Just trying to fill that niche in life that is always the collector of useless garbage until someone somewhere asks the question. Besides when one does not sleep and the reruns of Mayberry are the same as the channel 4 steps down, you can waste bandwidth pretty easy.

Evanston, WY has a complete turntable and 1/2 roundhouse, with an old powerhouse and most servicing facilities intact except no water tank. It was being used by a contract car shop, has been totally empty for a number of years. The turntable is a "bridge" type. Too bad this place is not by much population - would make a dandy museum. Pretty spooky to walk through in the evening. JLH

BNSF Parkwater, Washington turntable. The large roundhouse, which disappeared in stages and used to store some historical NP steamers, is long gone. The turntable lies within a balloon track which is accessed via the main yard or the "hell hole".

Uh Joe, you of all people should know that the Hobart diesel facility is no longer right? ;)

Guessing that your links to the Terra image maps are from an older pre-BNSF Commerce facility date. But it is nice to still see the plan view of the old ATSF diesel facility at Hobart after these last 7 years...

Yes, there's still a turntable and roundhouse in Cheyenne, though the roundhouse is nothing like what it used to be. The turntable is 125', or just barely long enough to turn a Big Boy. Here's a shot of Cheyenne shop switcher UP 96 on the turntable last year.

Yep, still there. and to add insult to injury, it is the home of a regional trucking company.
