Western Railroad Discussion > EMD F 59 PHDate: 12/04/04 21:44 EMD F 59 PH Author: wlj619 The Model number on the Serial # Plate of Metrolink Loco 852 parked at Riverside this afternoon shows Model F 59 PH.
Is that the passenger version of one of the freight locomotives that we see around here? Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 12/04/04 22:07 by wlj619. Date: 12/04/04 21:49 Re: EMD 69 PH Author: southlandwarrior Sure it wasn't F*59*PH? (asterisks added for emphasis)

Tom Meatzie Date: 12/04/04 23:28 Re: EMD 69 PH Author: southlandwarrior Emphasis on the 59 since Metrolink doesn't roster any 69 series stuff, was just a harmless misunderstanding there, Mr. Wanderer.
Date: 12/04/04 23:36 Re: EMD F 59 PH...Freight Version Author: Red To answer the question, the F59PH is a cowl, passenger version of the EMD GP59, of which NS was the major purchaser. Only difference is that the 710 12-cylinder engine is rated for 3200 HP on the F59PH, and is rated for 3000 HP on the GP59. It's just a different injector rack setting and slight engine RPM increase in Notch 8 that give the extra 200 HP, sort of the same situation with the 300 HP difference in the same prime mover in the SD70M and the SD75M (4000 vs. 4300 HP).
The GP59 was not a great big seller. I think that to have bought more of these...GP40 horsepower with a fuel-efficient 12-cylinder engine...would have been smart for the Class 1's. They make good yard switchers and local engines, and, can be lashed up in a consist on a heavy mainline freight...very versatile engines.
