CEBX Schnabel Car - Palmer Lake to Denver
Author: ColoradoRailfan

Hello-

I was able to get off of work on Friday to chase the Schnabel car from Palmer Lake, CO to Denver, CO on BNSF's Pikes Peak Subdivision (The Joint Line). Attached is a shot of the load itself, and here is a link to pictures from the chase:

The page also includes some text on the background of the reactor, where it is going, how long it took, what it does, etc. Also note that you can click on the images on the page to enlarge the picture.

Enjoy!

All I can say is... Wow. Excellent job shooting it. I'm surprised they haven't shown that thing on one of those 'mega machines' type shows. Definitely deserves it.

So, are the 'cabs' at the ends of the Schnabel occupied during the move?

Yes. They have hydraulic controls to move the load sideways etc to get it by things. This car did not have cabs originally but when they started making moves across northern MN and into Canada, they added them.

Discovery Channel Coverage

The helicopter that buzzed the northbound move at Palmer Lake, CO, on Friday, April 15, 2005, was doing a Discovery Channel program. BNSF made sure their new image, a Heritage III wedge, ES44DC, was assigned to this move. BNSF 7687 did a fine job. It's shown at Avondale, CO, April 13, 2005.

Note, security at Suncor Energy Refinery includes Commerce City police. They're keeping the public a safe distance from the unloading operation.

Cool... I'll have to keep an eye out for that one. After all, they've done segments on equipment a lot smaller then that.

Outstanding photos guys. And thanks for the info that Discovery will probably feature a special on this move at some point. ( Sure it's not History Channel ?? )

Kevin,
Great job of covering and reporting and taking the pictures. Number 7 & 8 were the ones I've been waiting for. Great shots. If there is another movement of one out there, would like to see it in person. upkpfan

This looks interesting. What is a Schnable car?

Built for HEAVY loads, this CEBX car is the largest in the world and has a load limit of 1,779,260 pounds (889.63 tons). The Schnabel car is a two-piece car and the load is attached between the two halves. Here is a link for more information and pictures of this and other Schnabels.
