A few of obvious ones ...

"Be specific - Ship Union Pacific"

"Dependable Transportation"

"Road of the Streamliners"

"Serves all the West"

Yikes!... I'm not even a UP fan. How scary is that?

Don't forget "We Can Handle It."

In terms of those white signs that locomotives wore, cabooses wore
a number of them too:

"Put in here - We'll get it there"

"Make Safety Your First Thought, Not Your Last"

"Safety is an Equal Opportunity for All"

"I Follow the Leader"

"Safety Plus, That's Us"

"Keep on Truckin' - By Train!"

"A Job Well Done Is a Safe One"

"We're a Great Big Rolling Railroad"

The UP beat the CB&Q to the punch by painting "Serves All The West: on one side of their boxcars and "Road of the Streamliners" on the other side, CB&Q responded with their "Way of the Zephyrs"/"Everywhere West" slogans.

UP has never been shy about using their locomtives and/or cars as rolling billboards.

The original poster referred to the "Fuel Conservation" slogans that were placarded on the handrails by the long hood. George Cockle had a full list and photo essay in his book "Union Pacific, 1977-80".

From the beginning the cab has been a slogan board for UP, even the black switchers originally carried "Serves All The West" "Road of the Challengers"

later the yellow cab diesels got "Road of the Streamliners"/"Serves All The West"

Then about 1959-60 came "Dependable Transportation". Some end-cab switchers got white panels with green safety slogans like those on contemporary cabooses.

about 1973 appeared "We Can Handle It"

About 1995 came the "We Will Deliver" on the long hood

The caboose slogans are extensive and the boxcars have a LOT of variations over the years.

Also one of the better PR names that still refuse to die...

Route of the Falcons...

Ask anyone who works the E/W main, and they will tell you how many times they have had to wait on the East(West) bound 'bird'.

If someone wants my opinion (they are going to get it anyway..) I believe that bringing back, or developing more "named" services, and promoting them like they have the Express Lane would really make these trains special, not only to our Fraternity, but to every one connected with them.

I rather doubt the rails actually say they got called yesterday for the "Express Lane". However, most all the guys know how many times they have had the chance to run "the choosen one" (formerly ZCSOA...the absolute hottest Intermodal on the line).

Enough of my hot air.

The one I remember seeing on boxcars in the '70s was "Ship and Travel the Automated RAIL way." It was in rather large, goofy looking type on the side of some boxcars. Or am I confusing it with another road?

Nope, you saw the boxcars with the big map on them of UP. Believe it or not, there are still a few out there that have escaped the paint shop.

One thing has always struck me about the UP's slogans--

most of them are kind of mediocre, and few have lasted very long.

Other RRs seem to have had fewer slogans, but put more time into developing them. It's a bit surprising, that since the UP was willing to give anything a try slogan-wise, that they didn't pick up many catchier ones over the years, especially the last couple decades of freight-only business. When I first saw the "we will deliver" slogan, I thought "uh oh, UP just picked another short lived slogan."

Maybe we could try coming up with some new ones...

Did anyone record which locomotive number had the slogans from the 70s?
