Western Railroad Discussion > UP 8179 & UP 8383

While out chasing the Soo 1003 today, an East Bound WSOR train had the UP 8179 and the UP 8383 in tow. The weird thing was, they were wrapped in blue tarps. They were painted in Horican. Trackside rumor is that the 8383 is panited in WP scheme and the 8179 is in MP paint. Anyone heard anything?

The steps appear Green in one, and Blue in the other....odd indeed.

Did you mean to write UP 8379? The 8179 shows in AZ, and the 8379 shows the same time/location as the 8383. Thanks, Raylewis

Whoa, nice catch, I have a feeling that UP knows something that we don't, and they aren't going to tell us!

Man, gotta be the fallen flags guys. Look at that MoPac blue!

The two units are going to Omaha and will meet up with UP 844 this week UP going to show some fallen flag paint jobs.

Hey sorry about the wrong number. It's been a long day. Anyone notice that it seems like there is something missing about 3/4 of the way back under the tarps?

Years ago I used to tell people we would never put wings back on the locomotives. :-) I also answered suggestions that we should paint some units in heritage paint schemes with hardly likely, but you never know...

Mopac for sure but the big question is, Katy green and yellow or...? Kinda dark for Katy green and more like WP green.

Latest betting line shows WP green paint to have the edge! Wonder when they are gonna get the merger year UP1982, 1983 and 1988 locomotive numbers? ( see http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,964246 )

Also, any guesses to what specific paint scheme the heritage WP SD70ACe will come out in?

My imagination runneth wild, but I'd say that the 8379 is in perlman green, with orange stripes on nose, or solid orange nose??? =) Even under overcast skies, MKT Green on the other hand, is a MUUUCH brighter green, just like John Deere tractors.

The yellow thing on the plow is just duct-taped on.

Those yellow things on the plows look like plastic covers held on by duct tape.

And that blue on the handrails looks more like sky blue or Air Force blue rather than MoPac blue if you ask me...but the blue on the plow looks MoPac.

Yeah.. probably just a big thing of yellow cardboard/plastic/MDF to protect the paint on the plow from flying rocks until the unveiling ceremony..

Somebody needs to peek under the tarps!

Not convinced that 8383 is painted for WP. The grabirons should be orange as well as the pilot (and nose - but we can't see that). Assuming they are going with WP's last version of Perlman Green.

No comment on the blue one.

I TRIED to peek under the tarps at Proviso... THEY ARE TIGHT! Ticked me off. Wish I had time to head to Omaha for the unveiling on Saturday..... But I am sure the pics will be on TO before the celebration is over.. :) LOL

Those came in today on a Butler-Proviso special move, and I am sure they are headed out on a Council Bluffs train tomorrow.......

Well, Gee whiz, UP now needs to do one in each of the following: SP,SSW, DRGW, CNW, MKT,CRIP,T&P,C&EI,CGW,M&SL.

I heard these were being painted for the branches of the military. The army, Air Force, Marines and navy. Thats what i got off loconotes

The handrails aren't right, but then again if they were going for a "full-out" heritage repaint then the MoPac trucks would need to be black instead of silver.

If it is indeed MoPac, then I'd much rather see a MoPac SD70ACe with silver trucks and sky-blue handrails, than no MoPac SD70ACe at all!

Actually the MoPac units had blue trucks, not black.

Do you think that they might have them painted up in the paint schemes of the fifties, MP Blue & grey and WPs CZ paint orange and silver?
