ILCOA-14 w/ UP1983 (WP) Tying down at Newark, CA 1PM
Author: espeeboy

crew just reported to DS58 that their crew is not qualified to run on the Niles Sub (Centerville and Hayward Line north to Oakland). So for now, they are tying doen the train at Newark until a crew can come out. They could go north via Coast (Mulford) Line but would have to get back on the Niles Sub north from Elmhurst Junction to reach Oakland.

The ILCOA crew also called in a burned out headlight on the lead SD70M UP4376! This is just speculation but there is a strong possibility that the power will be wyed at Newark to have the UP1983 face north and eventually lead into Oakland. Or we can hope for the worst with the headlight being repaired or the train going slow north to OAK at restricted speed or the NS GE will lead since it is facing north as the second unit.

Stay tuned...

Just missed it going through Alviso by a few minutes. I wrapped up my 1:00 meeting as quickly as I could, then headed to the back windows. I asked one of our tools people, who is a bit of a railfan, if something went by. He said that I'd just missed it.

Bummer.. Time to move your office over to the right set o' windows! I used to have a great office view of the good ol' Espee spanning from CP Strong thru Jack London Square, but well, that ol' company is down the tubes now!

Harry

Problem was, the meeting room has no exterior windows. And very few of our meeting rooms that have windows overlook the rails. I do have a good view from the back of the building however.

Update from Ryan just now 231pm - the ILCOA with the WP/UP 1983 SD70ACe just went by Eden Shores Parkway in Hayward. Plan is to tie down at Mulford and wait for a qualified crew or pilot to go up the Niles Sub into Oakland.

Well, that's what I can recall!

Cheers,
Harry

I was gonna post these on the Salinas Valley thread, but since there's a new one underway, here goes ... I was able to make some time this morning to catch the ILCOA at Aromas, and thanks to slow train speeds we (my daughter Kat & I) were able to grab three more runbys between there and Logan! I just wanted to check out the WP unit for myself ... it looks terrific in person, and despite cloudy skies today, her colors were just eye-popping. Here's a few quick photos, first of the power set just before Aromas.

And another, a pan view in bustling downtown Aromas ....

And last, with wildflowers near Logan.

Railfanning is ... calling your wife via cell to check the train's progress on TO. And then she offered to post the Aromas time for me! How cool is that?

Nice shots, thanks for those of you who posted. Even as trailing power, that paint is an eye-catcher!

So when is the 1983 going to be in Portola and for how long? Will they spot it somewhere so it can be properly photographed with a normal lens?

It's certaintly different. A fine layer of dust is already masking that dark green turning it even darker. Where's a wash rack when you need it.

A good layer of dust will make it look more authentic. At least that's the way I remember Perlman green...

Actually slow on the Mulford must have been lifted cause yesturday a double stack went by at MP 18.9 like at 50+ MPH. So I don't know about slow? Too bad I missed this heritage motive power.

as predicted, the train did proceed north this afternoon at restricted speed 30mph on account of no headlight (but ditch lights good). Slow orders have been worked on in the last week or so but this guy kept a nice slow pace. I still got screwed at Eden Shores...
