3751 Steamed up Next Week
Author: nycman

Got a card from the SBRHS today stating that the 3751, as part of their Educational Outreach Program, will be steamed up at LAUPT from Monday, Feb. 6 through Thursday, Feb. 9. Special thanks to several organizations and people, including our own PX320. I'm surprised Wild Bill hasn't posted this.

The SBRHS folks deserve kudos for their perseverance in bringing this event off. I'm sure they will have more to say as things get closer.

What's fired up mean - will she move under her own power (if even a few yards), or basically be displayed completely idle?
Kudos, still! Gotta keep the interest perked.

Hmmm - I wouldn't suggest actually doing this, but I wonder what a 4-8-4 Thomas would look like?

Knowing SBRHS they'll steam her from Redondo to LAUPT! Man, wish I had the time to see her next week, but heck, it was great taking pics of her back in 2002 when she pulled the Grand Canyon Limited out of LAUPT and talk about just enjoying a good day that day!

Today the good folks at Amtrak Los Angeles did a great job of staging the cars that are to be part of the 3751's EOP event this coming week.

Here's a shot of 10-6 sleeper Pacific Sands being spun on the Redondo turntable this afternoon.

We needed to have the car spun so its vestibule would be properly oriented to allow the students and their teachers can pass through the consist and exit without having to double back.

Here's the #3751 departing LAUPT under the old Signal Bridge #1 at the beginning of the California Limited Excursion in December 1991.

Yes...the locomotive is participating in the society's Educational Outreach Program. Between Monday and Thursday, the locomotive and 3 passenger cars stationed there will host several hundred students. These students will learn about railroad safety, history, and modernization. Math and Chemistry will also be included in their lessons. For more information, check out http://www.sbrhs.org/education.html.

Let's see, what would I rather study; math, chemistry or live steam locomotives? But I did see 3751 yesterday, Feb. 4 at LAUS, after arriving on a Surf from SAN to participate in Chinatown's Golden Dragon Parade. About all she did during this day was move a few hundred yards down her track, but she has never looked better. Her bell is brightly polished and her whistle is still loud as H***. Congratulations to the volunteers who keep her up.

Can I just go down to the station and have a look? Is access restricted? I could not tell from the web site.

Visitors can stop by and say hi during daylight hours. 3751 is parked on Track 13 which can be accessed only by walking around the extreme south end of the platforms. Please remember that LAUPT is a very active terminal, and all the rules of safety and security are strictly enforced. Do not block traffic, step off the platforms or walk across tracks at any time.

This event is part of our Educational Outreach Program; the visiting school kids have priority access to 3751 and the private cars in the display area. There are plenty of SBRHS folks around. If in doubt, ask anyone for help.

To follow up on the message "young_daniel" replied with, general visitors are welcome anytime after 3:00PM. Between 8:00AM and 3:00PM only SBRHS volunteers and invited teachers and students are being allowed into the area. This is to allow the students to have the complete attention of the volunteers and to allow them full access to the equipment for learning purposes.

After 3:00PM however, we would be happy to entertain any and all people who wish to see, hear, and learn about the locomotive. The private cars however will be closed to tours by the general public at the request of the owners.
