Perhaps the flag is at half-staff for the assasination of President Mckinley in 1900. Scott.

Great Pictures....So the C.P. is in the Calif. State RR Museum now, right?? I think I remember seeing her in there a few years back but the massiveness of AC 4294 is clogging my memory! Date: 05/04/07 11:09 Re: A Classic OLD shot from the SP Sacramento Shops. Author: wabash2800 atsffan Wrote:

Nah, they didn't use a clear coat over the decals to hide the decal sheen. <G> If you are a model railroader, you'll know what I mean. The number of stars on the flag might give use a clue to the year. The flag had 44 stars 1890 - 1996, 45 1896 - 1907, 46 1907 - 1912, and 48 1912 - 1959. Date: 05/04/07 22:36 Re: A Classic OLD shot from the SP Sacramento Shops. Author: BryanTCook So it was the Espee that originated the patch job:)
More, Martin! Date: 05/06/07 09:56 Re: A Classic OLD shot from the SP Sacramento Shops. Author: mikel Definitely DON'T STOP posting these kind of photos. This is pretty much the only way we can see the past :D
Yes, I've been on the "Behind the Scenes" tour at Sac. Seeing the place silent now and then alive with the pictures is wonderful !! I can't even begin to imagine this place in full swing !! Date: 05/06/07 13:12 Re: A Classic OLD shot from the SP Sacramento Shops. Author: JohnSweetser It is very likely that the flag was flying at half-staff due to the death of President William McKinley (shot by an assasin) but this happened on September 14, 1901, not in 1900 as "wp1801" wrote.
The year 1901 also marked when #1482 was obtained by the SP from the Union Pacific (no doubt accounting for the "big repaint on the tender" noticed by "atsffan"). Here is what Guy Dunscomb wrote on pg. 69 of "A Century of Southern Pacific Steam Locomotives": "In 1901, the Union Pacific finding itself with a vast surplus of power, sold to the Southern Pacific thirty-four of its...4-4-0's. Ten were...assigned to the T&NO...and the balance went to the Pacific Lines as 1459-1482, classes E-24 and E-25." |
