Steam & Excursion > Sierra Railway #3

Here's some images from the last couple of weeks while we disassemble Sierra Railway #3 for a complete restoration. SRY #3 was built in 1891 by the Rogers Locomotive Works and first saw service on the Prescott and Arizona Central before coming to Jamestown.

First up:

1- Down in the drop pit in the historic Sierra Railway roundhouse. The drop table is hydraulically
operated with water. The table can raise itself with no load upon it under 85lbs psi of water pressure.
To get more power to raise the table an air powered water pump boosts the pressure to raise the table.

2- Yours truly operating the drop table. It's quite a device for 1920's technology.

3- We are in the process of lowering the lead truck from the engine frame. I am in the foreground operating
the drop table with the lead truck as it is lowered into the drop pit.

4- The lead truck now lowered is moved laterally below the roundhouse tracks so it can be raised
up and moved outside to begin diasassembly and repairs.

5- My partners in crime: N. Comer (l) and G. E. Sapp (r) with the lead truck in the sunshine for the
first time since 1948/49.

6- This last shot shows the SRY#3 over the drop pit without her lead truck. Next will come the wheels.

Erik, you're right about the "1920's technology". However, the original drop table and concrete pit, and hydraulic system was replaced and all installed brand-new in 1952 by Sierra Railroad.

You can't have anything nice. Now somebody up and stole the boiler.

What happens when Arnold's budget axe closes Railtown 1897?

Don't worry, Drew. Fabian Nunez has it all figured out! Money grows on trees, especially in Jamestown.

Glad some things are moving forward on #3......a glimmer of hope.

Erik, when did the #3 come to Jamestown from the Prescott and Arizona Central?

Did you not hear? They borrowed again, 3.5 Billion. Do not worry, the garage sale has been delayed again. I want to see how much all of the SF stuff goes for when the sale happens.

I believe it was in early 1897. The #3 was used during the early days of construction for the Sierra Railway.
