Steam & Excursion > Southern Pacific P-10 4-6-2 #2486Date: 12/26/10 23:08 Southern Pacific P-10 4-6-2 #2486 Author: TonyJ Photo #1 – P-10 Class 4-6-2 SP2486 built by Baldwin Feb. 1924. Built to operate with 200 lbs. boiler pressure, it was increased to 210 lbs at Bayshore in Jan. 1940. According to Menke’s Compendium Companion, “2486 may have been the first engine to receive the long, rectangular blowdown muffler or spreader. It had them in late 1941 when the engine was painted in Daylight colors.” Engines 2484, 2485 and 2486 lasted in Daylight paint only about a year. These three engines also received an airhorn in the 1950s; mounted on the front face of the skyline casing, left side. The airhorn hasn’t yet been applied in photos #1 and #2, but is present in #3.
Photo #2 – It’s probably just an illusion, but it almost appears that the numerals on the cab are slightly “thicker”. All three photos show the 2486 assigned to Train #54, the Sacramento Daylight. Photo #3 – The presence of the airhorn is visible here. Date: 12/26/10 23:37 Re: Southern Pacific P-10 4-6-2 #2486 Author: Steamjocky Wasn't this an ex-Arizona Eastern or an EP&SW engine? I forget which thoug I do believe it was one or the other.

It was the two Lima 4-6-2s #2476-2477 that came from the Arizona Eastern. I have a amusing personal story about those two Limas that I'll tell someday. I think the skyline casing would be better OFF those engines. it should either be the whole thing like 4449 has or nothing at all. Date: 12/27/10 09:39 Re: Southern Pacific P-10 4-6-2 #2486 Author: TonyJ 1003-2719-1385-engr Wrote:

I agree with you and Frisco1522 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The skyline casings looked good on the 4-8-2s, 4-8-4s, and the AC9s. Not so with the 4-6-2s. I might give in with the T&NO 4-6-2s on the Sunbeam, but then they were fully streamlined. Tony Date: 12/27/10 09:56 Re: Southern Pacific P-10 4-6-2 #2486 Author: thefracturedfrog Agreed. Should've been all or nothing. It just looks... unfinished?
Date: 12/27/10 12:37 Re: Southern Pacific P-10 4-6-2 #2486 Author: Notch16 I believe the three Daylight painted engines also had GS-4 style skirts, shown removed here. Yeah, it didn't really work, did it? The Vandy tender also didn't help to smooth the transition.

I should have known that as I have a photo or two of a 3100 class 4-6-2 at the Colton RH back in the 1940s. JDE |
