N&W 1218 Interior boiler pic
Author: muzzlez

This weekend I was in Roanoke VA to see the N&W 1218. I\'ve seen alot of questions of what the inside of the 1218 currently looks like. This should settle everyones questions.

This is not the boiler interior however it is the firebox. The work appears to be first class on the sheet patches, to bad it wasn\'t completed.

I\'ll post more pics later, as far as the 611 train pull at the VMT, I was at the muesuem at 10:00am and left at 4:00pm and the 611 never moved an inch. I don\'t know what it was suppose to be.

Muzzlez, thanks for posting those. She looks great, but as we all would agree, would look better with some live steam emanating from her. They did a great job on the cosmetics. Nice engine.

Thanks for posting the pictures! Really great to see her looking so complete. That picture taken for Vanity Fair magazine of O.Winston Link sitting on her pilot sans rods, etc. was depressing.

Where are the grates ?
Author: natcaptracker

I know the restoration on this engine was never completed, but what happened to the parts that were placed in the boxcar when the restoration was stopped. Also, where are, or what hhappened to the grates from the 1218 ? Thanks. Brendan

One message I\'ve read has stated that it looked like some grates were in her tender. Also, I think many of the parts used in the restoration may have been stored in that boxcar.

Does it look like they are all there or are some missing ? Also, did you notice any other parts that might be missing ? Thanks. Brendan

Ahhh yes, the great parts "catch all" or storage bin -- the tender!

I don\'t know if all the grates are there. I didn\'t even think to ask. We were told at the VMT that there are still parts stored in a box car. Where this box car is I don\'t know.

I\'m sure many of the parts "in the boxcar" would have been put back on during the cosmetic restoration, including various appliances, boiler jacketing, headlight, number boards, etc. If you\'ve seen pictures of the loco in storage before the restoration, she\'s missing lots of stuff that\'s been put back on now. I understand Roanoke museum has the cab appliances, gauges, etc., that haven\'t been reinstalled yet and will finish restoring the cab as time permits.
Anything else that NS had was probably sold at the "quitting business" auction in 1995 or \'96. Lots of valuable steam parts were disposed of, some to other operations, some to collectors, and some for scrap.

I would not worry too much about where the little parts are off 1218. I believe that she will not run again. She is just too big and still needed alot of running gear work done.
