Any place on the web with photos of railroading in the Russian River area? Been to Korbel, Depot still intact and run by the Korbel Family. Nice place to visit on a weekend trip to the R.R. area. Would of loved to ride the rails there, but WAY before my time. Dave Date: 03/24/06 07:52 Re: Rare shot of A&MR #12 Author: drew1946 Even if the photo is not copyrighted, it would seem common courtesy to list the photographer if known. If unknown, that should be listed also.

The Korbel featured in these pictures lies up in Humboldt County, about six or seven miles east of Arcata. The community here originally carried the name North Fork; however, the Korbel Brothers from the Russian River country purchased the sawmill, primarily to produce redwood barrels for their wine operations. The Northern Redwood Lumber Company ran the sawmill up until the late 1950's, when Simpson Timber Company took over. Simpson continues to operate the Korbel mill today...it stands as one of the last large mills still active on the north coast today.
The Arcata & Mad River connected the Korbel sawmill with the Northwestern Pacific near Arcata up until 1983...the North Coast Railroad restored operations over the line from the late 1980's until around 1993, when track conditions forced the line to close. An A&K Railroad Materials salvage crew picked up the rails in November and December 1997. The Northern Redwood Lumber Company initially purchased this locomotive for use on its private logging railroads that used to run up two forks of the Mad River from the Korbel area, but the locomotive proved to be too big for the logging railroad. It then spent the rest of its North Coast career on the Arcata & Mad River before going to Arizona.
