Hi, can anyone fill me in on the details of this leg of the trip? When will it be leaving Salina, and when will it arrive in Herington? Are there any good photo locations on this stretch? Any other info would be appreciated as well. Thanks a lot, Jeff

The 844 is scheduled to leave Salina around 8 am and is due in Herrington around mid afternoon. Some good locations would be between Ogden and Manhattan, Wamego on the KP and Paxico, Alma, Voland and Alta Vista on the Cotton Rock. Hope to see you. I will be in Wamego and then head down to old K10 HWY for shots either in Alma or around Voland

Sorry, I'm new to the area (Topeka), and I'm unaware of the routing of this train. By looking at the locations that you mentioned on the map, am I supposed to understand that the KP is the UP line that goes from KC-Lawrence-Topeka, and then continues west along the north side of the Kansas River? The Cotton Rock is the Rock Island that was bought by the SSW in the early 80's. I know where this comes off of the UP in Topeka, but am unaware of where it goes from there.

Am I to assume that this Salina-Herington run is going to come east over the UP (KP?) to Topeka, and then cross the river and head Southwest to Herington on the Cotton Rock?

I grew up in the Chicago area and figured out the tracks there, and I'm confident that with some coaching I can figure out the tracks here too. Thank you for helping out a Kansas newbie. Thanks again, Jeff

Yes, the KP runs from Kansas City to Denver and it is on the north side of the river through the Topeka area roughly along US24.

Yes, that is correct. In Topeka it should cross the river just north of downtown Topeka and the Herington sub runs along the south side of the river to roughly Willard, KS. It then leaves the river and heads SW to Herington.

Jeff, Welcome to the Topeka area. there are several of us that sit down in Little Russia in the mornings and afternoons on the weekends. Little Russia is on the UP in Topeka. To access Little Russia in the mornings, take Kansas Ave north over the river to the Second stop light-turn right to Porubsy Dr. Follow Porbusky Dr until it dead ends then follow a gravel access road parrall to the UP until you see several vehicles. To access Little Russia in the afternoons, take Kansas Ave north over the river to the first stop light-Gordon St turn right and go 2-3 blocks then right
