Steam & Excursion > noted artist Gil Reid diesDate: 01/03/07 09:29 noted artist Gil Reid dies Author: Finderskeepers Sad news this morning:
Gil Reid has passed away. Plans are for a Memorial ceremony on January 9 at 1300 hours with a visitation commencing at 1200 hours at the Brookfield Presbyterian Church; 1485 Brookfield Road in Brookfield. I think an obit will be published in the Milwaukee Journal tomorrow indicating the family's desires re. memorials, donations, etc. I think it's to the church. FYI: Copyrighted obit from Trains newswire: Gil Reid, noted railroad artist, dies at 88 BROOKFIELD, Wis. - Gil Reid, 88, one of the greatest railroad artists of the 20th century, died early this morning in a care center near his home and near Kalmbach Publishing Co., for which he worked for 23 years. Born on Jan. 15, 1918, Reid grew up in Richmond, Ind., where he developed a lifelong affinity for the Pennsylvania Railroad and its K4s Pacific steam locomotives. During his time at art school in Chicago around 1940, he became friends with another great rail artist, Howard Fogg. During World War II, Reid served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and he was wounded in action near Naples. Reid joined Kalmbach's art department in 1956 and retired as assistant art director in 1978 to paint watercolors of trains full-time in his suburban Milwaukee studio, from which he could see Milwaukee Road's Twin Cities main line. From 1974 until 1990 and in 1992, Reid painted the scenes for the Amtrak calendar. In 1991 the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society presented Reid with its Senior Achievement Award. The Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society honored him in 2001. Reid's association with Trains magazine began with the second issue, December 1940, which featured his line drawings of PRR K4s. During his time at Kalmbach, Reid produced innumerable maps and illustrations for Trains, Model Railroader, and Kalmbach Books. Among his best-known works are the dust-jacket paintings for the books The Nickel Plate Story, Apex of the Atlantics, and The Hiawatha Story. Reid is survived by his wife, Lorrayne, and his daughter, Sarah (his first wife, Ann, died in 1993). Memorial service arrangements are pending. -- Date: 01/03/07 19:16 Re: noted artist Gil Reid dies Author: Copy19 A tip of my brush to Mr. Reid. I always enjoyed his work.

In the spirit of the late David P. Morgan: "Like a railroad conductor you've punched our ticket and pocketed it, hopefully pointing out a high spot or two on the journey ahead through this album o'er rails, checked your Hamilton against ours. It's time to retire to last plush walkover in the coach and listen in on the insistent whistle and hard working stack up front and doze in a world compounded of rail joints, coupled cars, steam and diesel and steel.... And we'll be the better for it. Travel easy over these rails my friend." Erik Young aka-SandingValve Date: 01/07/07 14:55 Re: noted artist Gil Reid dies Author: NYCSTL8 Thank you, Erik. Very nice tribute. DPM would approve.
