Any progress on the 3713?? Is she even close to being done?? I remember at Railcamp in 1998 helping remove staybolts from the engine. Hard to believe that was 10 years ago and shes still in the shop!! Hope shes not the "new" 1361!!

Nope.

Last I heard was that at least one section of the the firebox side sheet on the engineer's side (a few square feet) would need to be cut out and replaced. They think it was a wreck repair from sometime in 1940s IIRC.

As for turning into another 1361, I doubt it. 3713 is completely gutted, so any problems should have presented themselves by now. Not to mention she's ~20 years newer than 1361.

B&M 3713 is a very late model Pacific that came equipped with the Locomotive Valve Pilot device. It was a mechanical computer that helped inform the engineer of how to operate the engine for peak performance or economy. Few roads used them and even fewer preserved locomotives have them. The #3713 may be the only active steamer with a valve pilot if they kept it installed on her when the rebuild is completed.

Does anyone know if they plan to keep the valve pilot appliance active when the rebuild is completed?

Not much happening with the 3713 to date. Some of the last pix I took of her, she hasn't changed in appearance since those pictures were taken.

I'm waiting for the day when the 3713 and the Flying Yankee can be both running again. Maybe one can visit the other's location?

Well, if/when Norfolk Southern acquires Pan Am (Guilford, B&M, MEC) I think anything will be possible! :)
