Yes please! All I can tell from the photos is that it is a Baldwin 4-6-0, looks to be narrow gauge, with outside frame. J. Date: 05/29/09 17:50 Re: Steam locomotive now on display at Keizer Oregon Author: LoggerHogger Chris,
Interesting. Looks like a South American 4-6-0. Really stripped. The class lights should be gone bythe end of the weekend unless they put a fence up. This thread has some info on this engine. Sure is a neat looking engine. Thanks for posting pics Chris! Date: 05/29/09 18:28 Re: Steam locomotive now on display at Keizer Oregon Author: SBC_1344 Former Ferrocarril Coahuila y Zacatecas. The CyZ narrow gauge railroad ran in the namestake Mexican states, the yard and shops were based in Saltillo, Coahuila. In the 1970's, the CyZ was absorbed as an NdeM branch, NdeM standard gauged the former CyZ and the line is still used today.
In the National Museum of Mexican Railroads in Puebla, Pue. CyZ No. 10 is on display with various Mexican narrow gauge equipment. This artwork, painted by Guillermo Garza Galindo, represents CyZ at Saltillo depot in the 50's. Saltillo had an interchange for NdeM standard gauge and CyZ narrow gauge. Sister CyZ No. 10 now on display at MNFM in Puebla. The steam locomotive at Oregon should be painted black and lettered "COAHUILA Y ZACATECAS" on it's tender, then it'll look mighty fine. As a side note, the museum also has preserved wood CyZ narrow gauge sleeping cars, wich came from the Rio Grange narrow gauge system in Colorado. We can lay down a third rail and use it for pulling the Holiday Express in case the '49 doesn't make it back from Owosso in time!!!
We always have the ultra-dependable SP&S 700 to pinch hit just in case. Date: 05/29/09 20:29 Re: Steam locomotive now on display at Keizer Oregon Author: rehunn Kinda sad since the equipment sat just west of Pomona California (nest to
Brackett Field) for some time in near running condition as part of a still birthed project to run up and around Puddingstone Reservoir. After that it was largely dispersed to the front of several restaurants. Date: 05/29/09 22:03 Re: Steam locomotive now on display at Keizer Oregon Author: xtra1188w I hope that they do something for her that would be more dignified looking than that gaudy looking mess that she wears now. The CyZ was a really interesting operation, I read about it in Gerald Best's book on the Mexican Narrow Gauge, I have also heard stories of first hand accounts from railfans who have fanned that line.

Coahuila & Zacatecas Railway # 6. (Mexico) Three foot gauge, outside framed. Built by Baldwin in 1904, as a 4-6-2, converted by CyZ to a 4-6-0. CyZ was built as a copper mining railway, and was disrupted by the Mexican revolution. The 'Pancho Via' part is possibly more legend than fact. (How would you prove this without a picture?) Sold in the early 1960's to Early West Railways,(along with two 2-8-0's and about a dozen ng cars), EWRy was a group in Southern California that wanted to build a tourist RR near Pomona, CA. Then it was displayed at a resturaunt in SoCal, then sold to private individuals. Last I heard it was stored near Lake Elsinore, CA. Additionally: If I recall correctly it was Baldwin's only 36"gauge 4-6-2 (there is a builders photo of it) The other 2 locomotives from the CyZ that came to Pomona also exist. Both were 2-8-0's: #1 & #12 Last I heard one was in Colorado, and one east of San Diego. The one in Colorado did a stint on display in Palmer Lake, painted as "D&RG 433". Some of the NG cars still exist too: A few boxcars and gondolas were purchased by Glen Bell for the West Side & Cherry Valley at Tuolumne, CA. after that they were sold to an individual and sit alongside a road in Antelope, CA (Roseville), along with some West Side Lumber Co. cars and a pair of Plymouths.. Some of the passenger cars and a caboose made it to the Huckleberry RR in Flint, Michigan, and are in service. Date: 05/30/09 00:19 Re: Steam locomotive now on display at Keizer Oregon Author: SBC_1344 CyZ No. 1 is at a tourist railroad somewhere, eventually being restored to operation.
CyZ No. 6 is the one at Keizer, Oregon. CyZ No. 10 is at MNFM in Puebla, Pue. CyZ No. 12 is at Blackhawk, Colorado on display in front of a casino. This equipment was bought by West Railways or so and then each locomotive sold agian Date: 05/30/09 01:12 Re: Steam locomotive now on display at Keizer Oregon Author: Got_Steam I actually saw this one on the back of a flatbed traveling north on I-5 in California the other day. Thanks for clearing up the who/what/where. Didn't have enough time to grab the camera. Sorry she didn't make it back to steam (yet....)

Date: 05/30/09 07:22 Re: Steam locomotive now on display at Keizer Oregon Author: SilverSky With all of the hubbub in recent years concerning the Georgetown Loop needing a larger steam locomotive, this old girl would look fine running between Silver Plume and Georgetown. I wonder what mechanical shape she is in?

I'm glad I didn't waste my day driving up to Salem to see this as I only had one day off this week. |
