The latest from the V&T Lyon replica project...
Author: inyo22

Work on the Lyon replica is focused on completing the tender tank this month. Here are a few recent photos of the tank under construction at Kloke Construction in Elgin, Illinois. (This is the builder of the recently-completed Leviathan replica locomotive.)

The wood fence is almost ready to be riveted on.

Work is also continuing in California on the smoke stack. Here are some shots of the final steps in machining the smoke stack base... drilling the 1" holes for attachment to the smoke box. Here the 250lb. iron casting is turned upside down for machining.

thats one fancy looking drill press you got there. how did you hold the workpiece to the mill table?? or does a 250 lb casting not have a tendency to spin during the drill op. also, whats with the layout fluid on only four of the holes?? looks like good maching job though.

dave, out.

It appears to be clamped.

Dave:

The casting was clamped to the table in four spots for the drilling. Unfortunately, the clamps aren't too visible in the photos. Two of the holes are not marked with layout fluid because they were drilled a long time prior to the ones that are marked. The first two holes were used for positioning when we machined the top and bottom surfaces of the stack base. That work was all done on a very fancy CNC mill.
