TVRM: 4501 Locomotive Restoration Fund
Author: mike15224449

With the news yesterday, I would like to get everyones attention about the fundraisers that TVRM has for various engines in their collection.

There is a 4501 locomotive restoration fund for those who want to support the restoration of quote: "the green machine". There are also funds for E-8 6914 and Southern 630. For all the people who want to see 4501 under steam again please support TVRM in this overhaul endeavor. I know that many including myself want to support this restoration. So lets do it.

Here is the link to their final 2009 quarterly newsletter. Scroll down to page 10.

I wish they would stop pretending that the 4501 is a Pacific or a Mountain, and paint it in correct Southern Railway freight colors...i.e., black, with a big number 4501 on the tender.

I do understand your point.

This post is about the restoration fundraiser that they have for the 4501. People will want to contribute to the return of 4501 to service through fundraising, sweat and labor.

Myself included I will want to make a donation this year to help this fund and the Oregon Railroad Historical society(197, 700, 4449).

You mean the way she was painted in 1996 and has remained as such????

On an excursion in 1979, I asked Mr. Claytor why the 4501 was painted green. He replied that he always liked the paint scheme, and besides the locomotive was currently in passenger service, and should be painted as such.

Since she was in passenger garb for 30 or so years under the auspices of SR it's difficult for anyone to claim that that is somehow unauthentic. From a nostalgia standpoint there are going to be more people seeing her who remember her in green and gold than those who remember her (or other SR steam) in black. Not that anyone is asking us but I would cast my vote for green with an allowance that maybe a few years down the road she could do a stint in black.

In fact, let me propose this: She goes progressively back in time. Several years in passenger green honoring the old excursion program as well as SR passenger steam in general. Then she gets a coat of black and pays a visit to the old Kentucky & Tennessee as K&T 12. Then back to black 4501. Oh the fun we'll have.

Since NS it outsourcing the steam program to TVRM and 4501 is to be one of the stars, isn't NS providing some funds directly or indirectly to the welfare of the 4501?

Isn't TVRM going to make some money on this?

You don't "MAKE" money with steam locomotives. You just hope to earn enough to cover the next set of brass, tubes, flues, or superheaters. ;)
