Steam & Excursion > R&N - Blue through and through! Holiday pics (finally)

Wellllll - Dave Crosby beat me to it but there's just no such thing as
too much steam!

Reading and Northern's CNJ inspired Comet ran a series of excursions
through the Lehigh Gorge in Jim Thorpe, PA over the July 4th weekend.
I went up for a visit on Friday, got coerced by beautiful weather to
return the next day... and the next. I liked it so much, I may end
up back there without even so much as a whistle. Lot's of history and
plenty of hiking - and of course, there be TRAINS!

Really enjoyed the photos! The family and I love spending time in the Lehigh Gorge State Park.

All really nice but my fave is the crew guy polishing the brass.
And the B&W far shot is a winner too.

Found what may be the only 3 PM shot on the line.
Catch was walking through a slippery rocky river
with camera in hand to a small island.

STEVE BARRY - I DID NOT SEE YOU HERE THE NEXT DAY!??!
I told you the next day I'd be looking for you out the
window of the coach! This is the price you must pay. LOL.

Through the cut - best light of the day, what light there was.

Pusher service on the R&N! Yeah... that's it. I was the only
one who saw it. RN #425 - between runs assisted a freight movement
through the Gorge. Yeah. That's the ticket.

Through the Gorge one more time - this time more blue sky.
Live and learn. Brought the wide angle with me.

I think the chances of 2102 coming back to the rails
are on par with that of N&W #611. It could happen
under the right circumstances - and there has been
some "chatter" regarding both engines.

An up-turn in business and, locally, a bunch of ticket
sales can go a long, long way!

Not ever having been there, I have a couple of questions about the R&N and 425. Where do the trips start and end? Where is the R&N shops, yard, etc.? And where do they keep the 425? Thanks in advance for any help.

The Reading and Northern is a working shortline.
The headquarters are located in Port Clinton, PA
and that is where they keep #425, along with RDG
#2102, as well as C&O #614 and CP #1098.

You can (and should) go to the office and sign
a waiver to be in the yard limits though this
does not give you access to the shops, nor to
the turntable or roundhouse where the equipment
is stored. You may get a lucky wave over but
anything short of that is trespassing and we
locals would like to keep the R&N as friendly
a railroad as they are!

Trips typically leave Port Clinton, PA and go
to Jim Thorpe and return. There are other
itineraries including the special Gorge trips
which substitute steam on an otherwise diesel
outing. Access into the Gorge is by foot or
bike only.
