Southern Pacific 1221
Author: Cjcheely

Hello

I was out in demming NM and got a couple of shots of Southern Pacific 1221 0-6-0 S-10. It's nicely displayed at the vistor center for demming NM it also has SP caboose 1210 and a mow bunk car in the display.

A lot of "box car red" equipment, when just sitting in the sun rather than being in service, eventually starts looking like pottery.

Jacket looks very good to have been on display as long as it has. Wonderful desert air I guess.

I'd like to see this one running again. We need more switch engines on the steam scene! Too bad about the UP switcher in Sacto. She was a real "sweetie". Why'd they quit running her anyway? Somebody said it was 'cuz she burned coal instead of oil (greenies were freakin' out.) If so, sounds like a pretty easy fix to change her over, or is it just a case of the CSRM as usual?

Interesting that she retains the chrome numbering that she received as the depot switcher in San Jose.

What's the latest on the sister engine that ran on the Yolo Short Line several years ago?

It's stuffed and mounted next to the depot in Woodland unlikely to run again because the historical society that "owns it" and the railroad that restored and operated it for over 10 years were unable to reach an agreement on operating terms. I guess it has a better use just sitting under a tarp next to a partially restored depot rather than actually running down the track.

Sorry, end of rant....

SP 1233 is a sad story (photo from March 2010). However, SP 1215 at San Jose is looking good these days!

While riding a SP commute on Jan 1, 1960 I took a couple of shots of the SP deadline as we passed by Bayshore Yard. One of the steam engines I got was 0-6-0 SP1221. Imagine my reaction when years later I found out it was on display at Deming, NM. Sending an 0-6-0 twelve hundred miles must have been interesting.

Here's another that is sorely in need of some TLC, at Roseburg, OR.

True, but it looks much better than the 1298 at Santa Cruz that lost its tender.

The 1233 will NEVER run again in Woodland. The people that knew that loco are no longer there, will not work on it again with the current hysterical people and railroad that argue over the silly thing. No one at the Hysterical Group knows anything about a steam locomotive and have never turned a wrench on it. Nor will they! Both groups are an embarrassment for Historical preservation to say the least !

Yah Tony. The 1298 is missing alot more than the tender, if memory serves me correct. She's pretty much stripped to the bone! She was in bad shape when I lived there in the early 80's. The salt air ain't helping either.

When my wife and I retired in 1994 and moved from Santa Cruz, I remember the 1298 as a real rust bucket, but the tender was still with it then. Now the tender. plus the water tender from Dunsmuir are with 2-8-0 SP2706 and its tender. Three tenders and one 2-8-0 in Colusa makes a strange sight.
