UK loco of choice for 2010: 6201
Author: mike15224449

If anyone here on this board has travel plans to the UK the steam engine of choice for 2010 is the LMS 4-6-2 6201. She is a powerful pacific locomotive with a very sharp exhaust very much like the 1522. With the UK steam excursion calander being long and comprehensive most of the mainline steamers have a huge schedule to keep up with every year. So far 6201 Princess Elizabeth with a reserved itnerary compared to others has been at scheduled locations to pull trips. If an excursion got cancelled it has not been because of any mechanical issues. I think this reserved schedule is also a smart move by her operaters to ensure that she performs at her very best.

Lizzie as she is known by many fans has substituted for a few engines as well
70013 May 29th Lickey Banker. 9600 was the banker great press coverage
Pulled Cathedrals Express when a couple of A4 locos weren't availible June 10th
June 19th subbing again for 70013

Stats so far
12/12 with excursion scedule including 3 substitution calls
8 ferry moves

9 excursions remaining on her own schedule. We shall have to see. 70013 is still under repair. However, I would not be surprised if the 70000 Britannia loco of the same class loco does the work for her sister. Again though with 6201's performances going extremely well she could again be a great substitute loco.

Tired of judging locomotives by just their whistles. Performance is more important to ensure you get to a trip without any dissapointment.

The LMS "Princess" Class is the precursor to the LMS "Duchess" Class. 6201 Princess Elizabeth and 6233 Duchess of Sutherland share the same shed in preservation.....have been fortunate to see them both. They are similar in design, 6201 is indeed louder than 6233 as 6233 has improved steam passages. I always thought 6201 looked a bit awkward due to her seemingly odd placement of the 2 outside cyliders....far back near the front driver. 6233 is a brute, and has my vote for the most powerful pacific locomotive in England....not the fastest at 114mph, but the track inspector held the driver back on this run back in 1935. IIRC, has the record for highest drawbar horsepower of any English engine, but it took TWO fireman to achieve this!!
