A Bit o'Green from Russia
Author: Ardenwood

1. P36070 on a turntable in the 1990's between Moscow and Archangelsk.
2. P36070 during the last runby of the day going north from Moscow.
3. P36050 during a runby in the Ukraines on a very cold day.

Call me stupid, but paint those drivers black and put her in Daylight Colors and she is almost 4449. (OK, please don't call me stupid, but could not resist, sorry in advance if I offended anyone!!)

Haruo, as an Irish descendant, I appreciate those. What year were they taken? You have been all over the world. I'm sure you are feeling for your people in Japan right now, as are we.

You are quite correct. I would hazard a guess that the SP Daylights provided the inspiration for their appearance.

That's 4449 if preserved at Pea Soup Anderson's, Buellton California.

My thoughts exactly, I agree with OKTrainboys, africansteam and scottp
P36 does look like 4449 (I think 4449 looks studier) and inspired the
egineers who were on Project 36. Thank you for you kind words nycman.
1 and 2 were taken in 1991 (I think) and 3 in 1994.
I saw it when I was on the Trans-Siberian in 1979 just when I ran out
of film and I had to go back.
Here is another shot of P36050, the green is a bit darker than 070.

These are nice photos which illustrate how design is influenced by trends around the world.

Any idea about the present status of the locomotive?

Thanks,

I want to pass on a fact for you guys....There were more P-36 Russian 4-8-4's built, than any other 4-8-4 on the planet. 250 to be exact.

The red drivers were not a political statement, but made it easier to locate cracks when oil and dirt stood out on the red paint. The P36s were nice but my favorite was this 2-10-2 in a museum in Novosibersk.

From the side the skylight casing almost looks like part of a smoke deflector, an item
not normally associated with such a "high speed" locomotive.

Here is a side view of LV 2-10-2 taken in 1994.

Surely that white on the side of the engine in the last image isn't daylight showing thru between the boiler and the running gear?

Hi Iwilton,

Yes, indeed. It is the daylight showing through. The attached shows
an LV (2-10-2) on the point and an L (2-10-0) confirming the daylight.
