Some late photos of the UP844 returning to Cheyenne on Sunday 7/24.

First one is northbound at Evans Colorado. All the rest are at Greeley Colorado.

Yes, she was loading when going by at speed through Evans. They must have repaired the ground relay problems.

is it common practice on the union pacific to put a FRED unit on the rear of a passenger train especially when the business car has ditch lights and red/green markers?

Yes, because those "ditch lights and red/green markers" do NOT transmit brake pipe pressure information to the "Mary" box in the cab of steam and/or diesel locomotives, as the newer style "active FREDs" do. Plus, with the "active FREDs" the Engineer can put the train in emergency from the rear end, by activating the FRED from his "Mary" box in the cab.

Thus, ALL trains on UP, BNSF, NS, CSX, etc. will have a FRED on the rear end.

those aren't "ditch lights" on the business car
they are track inspection lights which are for
the benefit of officers on board who wish
to inspect the right of way after dark
