SR 4501 Update
Author: Phil

Recently I visited and worked at the Tennesee Valley Rail Road's shop in Chattanooga TN and took some pics of the 4501 undergoing a restoration. The first pics shows the front and right side of 4501. The second and third pics show the new boiler/firebox backhead with new washout plugs installed.

Thanks for sharing! I have been wondering how her rebuild is going. Can't wait for her to get back on the rails.

4501 is getting a stoker installed as a part of its restoration. Here are three shots of the stoker trough that will be installed in the coal bunker of 4501s tender.

Here's some shots of the stoker engine that will power the stoker on 4501.

4501 will need a doghouse on the tender (stoker equipped freight locomotives normally had a doghouse).

Really? I thought the purpose of a doghouse was shelter for the brakemen, what's it got to do with the stoker?

Place for someone to sit to shove coal in the stoker intake.

It was dangerous for the head brakeman to traverse the coal bunker with the auger working, so Southern Railway (and I assume others for the same reason) provided a shelter for him on the tender. Another benefit would be that he would be facing in the right direction to observe the train.

The Rio Grande K series were hand bombers and had doghouses, but yes they
were for use by the brakeman.

On Southern Railway, when a stoker was added to an older freight engine, its tender got a doghouse. I can't say that Southern did not have any hand bombers with a dog house, but the dog house was a good sign that an engine was stokered. With passenger engines, the head brakeman must have ridden in the baggage car. In the diesel transition era, when some Class Ts 4-8-2's with stokers, normally used for passenger, started pulling freight, they received doghouses.

Makes perfect sense, climbing around the coal pile above the screw intake
might be a just a bit disconcerting.
