Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation New Facility
Author: nomosantafe

I was in Portland the last week of October. I had the pleasure of visiting the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation's new facility, the Doyle McCormack Enginehouse. It is located in SE Portland, across the street from The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI). This is a very nice addition to the RR preservation world.

Check out the ORHF website

http://www.orhf.org/

If you have any extra money to donate to a charitable organization, the ORHF is always looking for donations. As I have done for several years now, I will send them a check. It's kind of a selfish thing, as I will be moving back to Portland in 6 years when I retire, and I will need a place to go play (the tax deduction is also a good thing).

Here are some photos from my visit.

All I can say is "WOW".

Great facility! Wonderful to see the equipment indoors and looking good. Thanks to all who made it happen!

Was there myself over the weekend. Put no money in the jar. SENT A CHECK. Nothing runs on love alone. Great to see this stuff indoors. And on the streetcar line!!

Once Doyle gets his PA finished, what kind of opportunities will exist for him to run it? Is running a vintage diesel as difficult as a steamer from the administrative/insurance standpoint? Are railroads more willing to let vintage diesels out than steamers? I would hate to see all of his efforts not be able to be enjoyed out on the road occasionally.

Coincidentally, we made our first visit to ORHF's new facility on November 1st, but we didn't have to come from as far as Fort Worth. We were treated royally by the docents before we headed off to the wilds of Newberg and McMinnville. Like Nomo, we have sent in a check every once in awhile over the years. Unlike him, we don't plan on moving to Oregon, but it sure is lovely to visit.

Sorry to sound like a broken record...The work that the groups have done to raise money, design and build a facility is simply great. I think this is a great example of what can be done given the drive and knowhow. Congratulations!
