Steam & Excursion > With Mt. Shasta Always Looking On- McCloud River RR!

Under the ever present backdrop of Northern California's Mt. Shasta, the McCloud River Railroad went about it's daily business of steam shortline railroading in fine style.

In our first view we see the hogger on McCloud River RR 2-8-2 #17 waiting for his helper engine to clear the switch and drop onto the rear of the train of cars that #17 will soon take out of the McCloud yards.

In the second view we see McCloud River RR 2-8-2 #16 on the rear end of the train with #17 on the head powering the freight out of McCloud and beginning her climb up the steep grades to Signal Butte. There is a caboose cut in behind #17 for the descent through the Signal Butte switchbacks and down in to Mt. Shasta City.

In the final photo we see the view that the shop workers in the McCloud River RR roundhouse had of Mt. Shasta as they went about their task of readying the fleet of McCloud River RR steam locomotives for their duties on this famous shortline.

MCRR ALCO 2-6-2 #24 has left the McCloud roundhouse and is moving to the head end of her freight train that is bound for Mt. Shasta City. She will be assisted by Baldwin 2-8-2 #15 on this fine September morning.

As the towering form Mt. Shasta looks on, the drama of steam railroading in McCloud plays out once again with all the drama we have come to expect from the McCloud River RR.

Fortunately for many of us, we were able to experiance for ourselves the drama of Steam on the McCloud with Mt Shasta looking on.

These days will be missed.

Martin, where was the roundhouse located in relation to the current shops? Take a good look at photo 2 where the trailing loco is. Something sure looks goofy there--the rear of the boxcar doesn't look right, and the loco appears to be behind it.

The old roundhouse was in the large open area that is in front of the new diesel shop. The Old roundhouse faced north towards Mt. Shasta and the new shop faces south.

The boxcar in the 2nd photo is being pushed by the helper. It must be an optical illusion.
