North Pole Express in Essex, CT
Author: melloj

While in Connecticut last weekend I happened to drive by the museum in Essex as the North Pole Express was about to depart. Of course, I parked and grabbed my camera.

The locomotive is younger than a lot of TO members. It was made in China for the Knox and Kane a few decades ago (was #58) and was bought and reworked a bit to look like an old New Haven Mikado.

The video lost a bit of quality when I converted it to a format that allowed me to post it here. As for the direction, cinematography, and lack of editing: I can only blame myself.

Chinese made or not, that is one fine looking locomotive! Nice bell and decent sounding whistle. All it really needs is a nice pair of Class lamps. Started and walked away with that string of heavyweights quite nicely. Thanks for posting.

Nice looking train. I didn't see any wisps of steam from the train and wonder if the cars were heated.

That is a great video very distinctive detail on the loco. But I had to watch several times to watch the joy on the little children.

The whistle on 3025 is from a New Haven pacific and is on loan from one the the Valley engineers. As for class lamps, two of the engineers on the Valley have their own that they hang on any loco that they run, each set of a slightly different design. Adds a nice personal touch and makes it easy to spot who's on the engine if you know to look!

BTW, the Valley runs two steam-hauled trains at this time of the year, and they meet at Deep River Landing. Well worth seeing if you're in teh area.

Nice consist. I never noticed the spoked tender truck wheels before.
Engine sure looks nice in her NH garb.

Great looking train with those standard passenger coaches apparently full. Sharp capture of sights and sounds.
Almost could smell the smoke!

That looks like a safety valve.

Who was the crew that day?

Here's the ex-New Haven whistle. #3025 has also run from time to time with another whistle, I believe ex-IC.

That is the same whistle that did time serving Uncle Sam in 1971.
