FoggFile: how 'bout a Big Boy cab ride in 1958?
Author: valmont

Howard Fogg took these images in October 1958, when he rode in the cab of UP Big Boy #4004 from Cheyenne to Laramie ...

1. a view we rarely see, UP's long gone Tower A in Cheyenne, from the cab of Big Boy 4004, as it starts it's trip west to Laramie

2. no doubt where this was taken from, somewhere out on the main

3. and this classic scene of mainline steam that Fogg shot while 4004 was undergoing a service stop .... is this Harriman, or?

thank you, I never saw the servicing tower, but the building in the background looked familiar

Here's a couple of real LOW resolution scans of photos I took from up on the coaling tower. It's an #844 excursion about 1961. I'm sure that there is absolutely NOTHING left there, except track and a road crossing.

Not much has changed in this shot, other than the trackside buildings are no longer there, and the Hitching Post Inn was burned to the ground. Even the Super 8 is still the same. Nice shots guys, always enjoy looking at Howard's images.

The fact that it had to stop for coal and water only halfway to Laramie speaks volumes about what happened to steam.

Taken last March on a cloudy afternoon from the MOW building on the south side of the tracks near the Harriman Road. The cut to the west in now covered with trees.
