Interesting little operation that reminds me a lot of the Skunk up in Ukiah/Fort Bragg, CA.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, can we get the stencil straight this time?

Hey, that looks an awful lot like an MRSR crew running that locomotive doesn't it? I think it does...

Cheers, Dave

Yah Dave, I thought the hoghead looks like a guy we know called Jim Abney. And isn't that Brian firing?

Amen to all you said, Chris. A very enjoyable ride, and they run enough trips that after riding you can chase and get some cool shots. Jim, Brian and crew should be able to run Crossett 10 with their eyes closed after all their experience with twin Hammond 17 at MRSR.

Thanks, Chris, for posting the pictures of what seems so long ago now. Several MRSR volunteers were involved in the restoration and/or operation of the 10 on the BYCX and are looking forward to seeing it return.

At http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,1368640,1368640#1368640 is a short video I posted six years ago that may whet the appetite of potential passengers who've been asking when it will return. The fellow waving at the Lucia Falls Road crossing in the video is Ed Kamholz, the younger brother of SP&S 700, BNSF, MRSR, BYCX and WP&Z hogger Greg Kamholz mentioned in this thread. His appearance was a surprise to me as I had no idea he was coming and I had not previously seen him on the BYCX.

For those who haven't yet noticed, the BYCX is remembered in a letter to the editor on page 5 of the February 2013 TRAINS magazine.

Well, Jim, you'd think the answer would be "yes" but there's one thing which tripped me up and I had to constantly make an effort to check on when I was running both engines in 2007: The cylinders cocks lever operates in opposite directions on the two lokies. Even though they were sister engines built new for the Crossett Western in 1929 and appear to have come out of the same mold (except for the obvious smokebox extension later applied to #10) the 10 is an Alco-Brooks Works engine and the 17 is an Alco-Schenectady Works engine.

Say Jim,
Do you think we need to remind the people that are riding in the open car to wear a hat as they WILL be enjoying a bit of nature in the form of fir needles ala exhaust?

You hit the nail on the head - coming from two different factories they were not both identical! The #10 gained recognition as being the last locomotive built by Brooks Works!

Thanks, Pete, for that historical info. I wasn't aware of that.

Chris,

Great photos!! Thanks for posting them. However, you left off a few crew members. Myself as well as Luke Johnson as well as a few others. It is great that the 10 is coming back. I spent a lot of time on her the first time around. This time is already proving to be well worth it. This is one engine that means a lot to me. Also funny how only one of the "crew" members you mentioned have been working on 10 again. All of those MRSR boys seem to be MIA.
