Steam & Excursion > UP 4014 Big Boy, Any News??

Seems the subject dropped off, is there anything significant to report on the Proposed 4014 Resurrection?

Last I heard it wasn't sounding good for the UP to be able to acquire it. Bummer.

I rather they go to the California State Railroad Museum and rebuild the cab forward steam engine.

Big boy... Yawn =P

Use the one already in Cheyenne.

The Challenger is already close enough to a Big Boy. If they have that much money to throw around, why not pick something completely different, like an 8500 HP gas turbine or the UP 9000. Sure those stand a snowball's chance in you know where of being restored, but to me they'd be far more interesting to see running than a Big Boy!

They have the last steam engine they ever bought new with the 844. Maybe they want the biggest they ever had too. Might be a "size matters" thing. I hope they can make it happen whatever the reason.

The reason is that a third party has offered to finance the restoration of a Big Boy before he passes on. And so the search continues I guess.

So if a third party is paying for it then why putting 3985(Better engine anyway) on hold for now?

Yes, that would be great. A truly unique loco unlike anything else running today.

But the UP has that only UP steam locos policy so that wont fly on this railroad.

Are you REALLY sure about that "policy"?

The UP has allowed SP4449, and Frisco 1522, to name just two, to operate on their property in years past.

But UP didn't pay to restore them and UP doesn't own them. They're just guests that cost UP nothing.

Ok, let me get this straight...

UP is still trying to aquire 4014 yes? or no?

If yes, is there any news?
If no, why did it fall thru?

A third party is wanting to fund a big boy restoration.
Yes? or No...

If yes, is this person working in concert with UP?
Yes? or No?

And finally, those who have good sources (like Hotwater and Bob3985), what are the chances of a big boy getting operable as of today?

Not to be a jerk, but sometimes these threads are so scattered with random things, a particular topic can't be followed factually.

from what I hear they didn't want this out to the public originally but UP hands was forced because of all the rumors that were going around Give it time they want to keep the rest of it out of the public until they are ready to say

I believe the 3985 is on hold to allow winter maintenance on 844.

I would imagine most any locomotive could be made operable given enough money to finance it.
