Boston & Maine 3713

At Steamtown Sunday 01/20. work progresses slowly on 3713, shown a new fire box, and back head, stay bolts have been replaced, don't look for her to run for at least five years from now, she progresses as funds, and personal allow.

Good to see the restoration actually in progress. To my eyes, if or when it gets operational, it could quite possibly be the best looking steam locomotive running.

So are NKP 765, SP 4449, and Southern 4501 chopped liver?

No. Why do you think so? There's lots of operating steam locomotives today I am a big fan of, and have taken lots of photos of them riding behind and chasing them. I just think that particular B & M Pacific is the best looking steam locomotive I've ever laid my eyes on.

Not a New England fan but, the boilers on those engines really give it a massive look.

I too have to say that the B&M Pacifics are one of the most eye pleasing steam locomotives to look at! My favorite is the looks of the UP 3800 Fetters Challengers, though.

So, by mentioning those three but not PM #1225,
AT&ST #3751, and others... you imply perhaps
they are chopped liver, lol.

To be blunt, in my opinion, YES!!!

Meanwhile 1361 sit's in a disassembled pile, I'll never understand why it could not be completed. Who is funding this resto? Donations for 1361 must have been way more popular.

I represent chopped liver and am offended (just kidding). 3713 is a gorgeous machine. Where was her usual passenger assignment in service?

The 1361 was never owned by Steamtown/the national park service. She is no longer at Steamtown, but is supposed to be heading back to her owners in Altoona.

Usual assignments? Probably on the Eastern Div., to Portland, ME, the New Hampshire Div., to Concord, NH, or the Fitchburg Div., to Troy, NY. In truth, the P4a/b's were used all over the B&M system. I've seen pictures of a P4 in Winchendon, MA, on B&M's line up through Keene, NH, to Bellows Falls, VT.

It should look big, it's a big Pacific relative to others.

Thank you. So she likely roamed far and wide. I was not sure if she was restricted or assigned to a particular train or route. I hope I have the pleasure of seeing her run someday.

It would be great if the engine could indeed run on ex-Boston & Maine lines and Guilford would endorse it. Of course, I know full well the folks in Steamtown own the loco but at least a couple of trips out East would be great. Maybe Guilford can provide some funding to speed up the process in exchange for its use for a limited amount of time?

There is something about a high drivered Pacific that is very pleasing. As for those others, 765 is my favorite engine currently operating, 4449 is a true queen and 4501 is an old favorite, but I'll agree that 3713 is a fine looking locomotive.

And this was one of the engines named in a contest for school children. Was the name for this engine, the "Constitution"?
