ferry move of UP 4014

Wonder what the routing MIGHT be to go from Pamona CA. to Cheyenne CO?...Will they ferry over Donner or Cajon or run the sunset route to El Paso then go north? Just wondering?

Cheyenne, CO? Think ya mean Wyoming, but if the work is being done by an outside contractor, that work may not be done in Cheyenne, WY either. I am hoping that it is done in Cheyenne, however. === === = === JLH

Um, Cheyenne is in Wyoming, not Colorado.

4014 was routed over the Los Angeles and Salt Lake (historical UP route to Southern California) when it came west to Pomona. I'd expect it would go to Cheyenne, WY via the same routing eastbound, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City. Ogden, UT and on to Cheyenne via the UP mainline.

According to UP's website it will be moved to Cheyenne for the restoration http://www.uprr.com/newsinfo/releases/heritage_and_steam/2013/0723_4014.shtml

I was told the museum members said 4014 was slated to be moved to Colton in October for bearing work, then on from there. On UPRR website it says Cheyenne so I think that's where it will get most of the work done. I also think it will be the Salt Lake Route and on to Cheyenne via the UP mainline.

When they were in regular operation, how far west did the Big Boys work? Ogden or did they make it down the LA & SL?

Bill Kratville, in his book "Big Boy" indicated that UP made provisions for 4-8-8-4 operations between Salt Lake City and Pocatello with a few yard track restrictions. Clearances were also made between Granger, WY and McCammon, ID. There is no record of them operating on those routes, however. Reportedly there were a handful of trips between Salt Lake City and Milford, UT during WWII, but no operations west of Milford. During normal operations the 4000's ran between Ogden, UT and Green River, WY, until they were bumped to the Cheyenne to Laramie run over Sherman Hill in the 1950's.

The spec sheet on the UP website indicates conversion to burn #5 fuel oil, at least that is what I read.

Kratville's book says that some "test runs" were made to Milford UT, but doesn't say how many or which locomotives. Also notes that they had to use a clamshell crane at Lynndyl to take coal. Does not mention it, but the same kind of thing would have had to have been done at Milford, plus some way to clean the fire and get rid of the ashes.

I got the info from Realist when a while back asked the same thing, and no they were cleared to run on the OSL to Pocatello but didn't.

As far as I know with the 4005 test they used a single 800 class burner, they have figured out how to convert it to oil using two SP type of burners is what I read on another site, I take it will be a set up like what SP used on their 4-8-8-2 Cab Forward Locomotives.

Somebody in Omaha, who writes that stuff, really should have done their homework. The UP steam crew hasn't been using #5 power plant oil for many years. They switched to recycled waste oil, and now since 2012, they are using #2 diesel fuel.

Hey, get UP to re-open Tennessee Pass to run the 4014 over. That way they would please every rail fan!

Does the UP even have enough people currently in their steam program to rebuild such a large locomotive? The 3985 has been OOS for a long time. This will be a massive undertaking!

No, they don't. Contractors will be used.

Send the front driving unit to TVRM, the rear to Strasburg, and get Wasatch to supervise boiler and tender work. Hire combustion experts to design the oil burning system. You still won't know for sure til you do it but they can do computer simulations which will help. The barn of a firebox was designed for poor quality coal.

Curious as to the 4014's maintenance prior to going to Pomona? Last overhaul? Problems etc? Stored serviceable I presume till the early 60's??
