Cheyenne Roundhouse
Author: 4000Class

Last time I looked, the roundhouse in Cheyenne was a "bit" short in housing a Big Boy. It's also on the list of Historical Buildings. So modifying it's gonna be a real paper chase.

Anyone have any updated poop?

For the roundhouse, they can uncouple the tender if it's too long. I don't know if the stalls that are left are the long ones from "back in the day". It will fit in the shop I'm sure.

It won't go in the roundhouse it will go over to the steam shop. Which is what is left of the old back shop. The roundhouse has the E's, 5511, 838, the Selma and 3985 in it now.

They don't need a tender, 3985's is already converted to oil, and according to others on this site; she is just a parts source now anyway!

I don't think it would be in the roundhouse much, anyway. Most of the work and storage space is in the backshop.

Is the 3985 tender, identical in every way to the Big Boy's?

Very close, both are 14 wheel tenders, only difference between the two is one 3985 has tank for oil in the original coal bunker. 844 and 838 tenders should also be the same, if they use any tender off another locomotive it should be 838

Tenders for 3900's and 4000's were virtually identical. But they are NOT identical to the 800 tenders.

Look at the difference in the shape of the sides at the top. 800 tenders also carry less water.

I would love to know how much money it would cost to rebuild at least 1/2 of the roundhouse. I looked at google maps and it would be nice to restore the area. A museum there would also be nice.

Maybe another wealthy benifactor.....

UP 3985: 25,000 gallons, UP 844: 23,500 gallons, UP 4014 with current setup: 24,000 gallons, according to UP steam website.

Plenty of length in the steam shop. I think all three E's can stay coupled. Saw the 844, with tender, and SW10 behind it.

Didn't the challengers have those tool storage boxes on the one side of the tender also? I know the bigboys never had them. Seems like the challengers got those when they were converted to oil.

If you are referring to the box on the right side of the tender about midway, that is where the cab signal equipment is located, not tools, and the 4000's most certainly did have them.
