Steam & Excursion > A few of the UP 4014 in Pomona today

After the news of the UP steam crew working on the Big Boy in Pomona, CA yesterday, my dad and I headed over to visit the behemoth for one last time on display at the LA County Fairgrounds before the big move. Living only about 10 miles away, I wished I had visited more often. Here's some pictures of the 4014 today.

10-12) The engineer's side in the cab, the tender interior, and the UP steam crew's tent (I think they went to lunch just as we arrived).

13) One last shot, from the rear looking forward. It will be interesting to see how nice they can make this engine look and run. I'd sure be willing to make the trip to Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska to see her run in a few years.

I was down there as well this morning...just had to see 4014 before heading to Wyoming.

Thanks for sharing your photos. UP is really hustling on this and the work done so far in preparation for the move is very interesting to see, I only wish I could get out there.

PasadenaSub...I think I was up in the cab when you were taking those shots..."someone" with a SLR and flash was!

What the vast majority of you cannot or certainly do not know it that a great deal of the reason behind the 4014's present condition is down to a very, very dedicated man who lives nowhere near 4014 and a very solid local buddy. The "gantry" you see in these photos was built by this guy, among many other maintenance elements, most with his own money, time and sweat. Over the decades, we have heard of similar stories. This one's real.

No, it's most assuredly not me! I simply want to make sure all know that a deeply dedicated man has had a lot to do with what we're set to benefit from in the future.

Uh, Martin, I think the adventure began a month or so ago when the word "hit the streets" that UP was interested in restoring it etc. What I am waiting for is to see the posts that will go off the charts once they start to actually move this thing back to Wyoming--------there will be second by second posts from the first turn of the wheel until it rests in the Cheyenne roundhouse or whereever. I'll bet this subject has broken all records on TO if you add up all the threads and views and posts--------maybe Todd can give us a run down of the current status of how many views etc on all the various threads!! :-)

I'm surprised at how dry the valves and pistons are. When we opened 1522 up for the first time, everything was still sticky from steam oil.

As I remenber years ago, that all the pistons were loaded in the coal bunker in the tender. The "pistons" were actually painted pieces of pipe -- look at your photos.

Those two "mickey Mouse" loaders will never break the loco loose from sitting. Call Hulcher, they probably would be happy to bring out their giant loader.

My suggestion to Todd is that he has a seperate thread titled 4014 move. Then we all could post photos there and not clog up the steam board....

Excellent idea!! But I'd still like to see a count on the number of posts and views and etc!! I am sure it is an all time record and growing!!

It will be sad in a way that the museum is loosing 4014 but I bet they made the deal that if she is retired again they get first dibs. It's going to be great to see the ol girl rolling back towards home.

The thing I love about these pictures is the natural weathered colors #4014 appears in, not all tarted up with lots of shiny black and bright silver. Aside from the boiler jacket missing, she looks like she could operate today.

Next time I'm near Pomona I plan to visit the museum and make a small donation in thanks, and see the rest of their collection, of course.
