Steam & Excursion > Thanks Chessie and RossDate: 08/21/13 18:17 Thanks Chessie and Ross Author: refarkas Last week I put a shot of Chessie 2101 on Trainorders. Sadly 2101 was horribly burned in a roundhouse fire in Silver Grove, Kentucky. Thankfully Chessie System and Ross Rowland replaced 2101 with ex-C&O 614. Steam-starved railfans were given a second helping of history as Chessie 614 steamed into Connellsville, PA on July 11, 1981. Thanks Ross and Chessie.

That experience lead me to become interested not only in steam but in the roads that operated them, how they operated and so on and as you can tell my favorite is the N&W. Well fast forward some years to Train Festival in Rock Island,IL, we had just returned to the IAIS yard after the all day excursion to Bureau,IL and back, and I mentioned to my wife that I wanted to walk down and get some video and photos of the 765. She waited and I and my two boys walked down to the big Berk which I hadn't seen in person or up close since the New River trips. As the three of us approached the 765 I saw Ross standing there and as I got closer he introduced himself and I just thought to myself...oh believe me I know who you are, so we chatted briefly and I had shared with him my first experience with the Safety Express and such, and he turned to me and asked "Ya know what the best part was?" to which I replied what's that, and he said "No bleepin diesels" and I chuckled and agreed completely.
Ross then asked if I wanted to take a photo of him with my boys by the 765 and I jumped at the chance. Well the point to this is that he sure didn't have to do that or talk to lil' old me but he did and he was very kind and friendly towards myself and my boys...I will never forget that. So I also would like to say thank you Mr. Rowland for that great introduction to steam all those years ago, the great introduction to Lima and the great memory that it created that has stayed with me to this day...I swear I can still smell the smoke... and also for creating another great memory with my boys and the 765 that day. If the road name was Chessie system, that should have been a no brainer. (IMHO) Beautiful Loco regardless.

We painted the tender as requested by the railroad who was sponsoring the program and I think that was a very reasonable request.
Yes, it certainly was a pleasure to be able to operate a systemwide program without any diesels involved. Let's hope it can happen again?? Hope springs eternal. Ross, is there currently any active foundation setup for maintaining/preserving the locomotive or work going on with it. I saw her briefly at Clifton Forge when passing through last year. The green paint scheme is obviously a fantasy scheme, and I prefer the black for historical accuracy, but I will say, she still looks good in green. Such a well balanced looking engine I think, and she could probably pull off any color, lets just hope if CSX did jump on the band wagon they didn't request a Gray/Yellow/Blue paint job! Date: 08/22/13 18:25 Re: Thanks Chessie and Ross Author: prr4828 I was fortunate to see C&O 614 in steam twice. Once running from Baltimore in the Chessie Safety Express and the other on New Jersey Transit in 1996 and 1997. I also saw RDG 2101 in simple AFT livery in Massachusetts as a kid.
Yes, Ross, thank you for bringing big steam to the main line again and again. It would be nice if CSX adopted a case-by-case view of steam. Anyone object to C&O 614 pulling the New River Train .... ? :-) * JB * Date: 08/22/13 18:29 Re: Thanks Chessie and Ross Author: NWClassJ prr4828 Wrote:

Anything to have the engine operate is fine with most folks. Any locomotive can be painted black and sit in a museum.
