Yreka Western 2-8-2 #19 Up For Sheriff Sale October 25!
Author: LoggerHogger

This was just posted by the Siskiyou County Sheriff:

A sheriff’s auction for Yreka Western #19 is set for October 25, 2013 at 10 am at the Yreka Western shop, Yreka, California. The locomotive will be available for inspection on October 24 between 9 am and 11 am.

Payment by bank letter of credit or cashier’s check will be required from winning bidder at the conclusion of the sale. Winning bidder must arrange to remove the locomotive immediately from the property or arrange storage with Yreka Western.

Maybe this will finally let this fine engine return to operation. Let's hope.

What was the status of the engine between now and when last ran at McCloud?

Mitch,

She went from the McCloud to Yreka in the early 1950's after the Baldwin Diesel fleet at McCloud was expanded. She was at Yreka until the early 1970's when she was shipped to Cottage Grove, Oregon where she ran for years on the Oregon Pacific & Eastern.

She then returned to Yreka where she has been ever since. She did venture back to McCloud in 1994 where she ran a special weekend train that actually was the beginning of the return of steam to McCloud

The sheriff sale is due to a lien put on the engine by the boilermaker who did the last 1472 day work on the engine.

19 returned to McCloud in 1994, not 1992.

Is this post available to the public to view? I can't seem to find it anywhere on the Siskiyou County Sheriff's website.

On a semi serious note, what would the estimate for this loco be?

The property has been posted with the sale notice. The sale notice will be listed in the local paper.

What would stop a scrapper from buying the locomotive? Seems like this could end very badly...

Remember that old saying from the 70's?... "I'd buy THAT for a dollar!"

Nothing, but I would be surprised to see it go to scrap. It's reportedly in pretty good condition and has tube time left (not sure how much) so I would think it would generate more interest than just scrappers.

Cheers, Dave

Let's hope it goes someplace with trees. The background for the #18 has been wierd when it was on the Sierra and now on the V&T - no trees. At least the 25 on the OCSR lets it get into the forest. That was a big impression when I rode the MCRR. Railroading in the trees!

I'll keep my fingers crossed that she goes to a good home, with room to operate!

Sad. I had a great time ridding behind her with my dad several times. I hope she ends up in a good place where I can take my kids to ride behind her.

It only has tube time left if you have access to the paperwork and someone remembered to file the Form 5. I might check with Region 8 in Vancouver.

The good news is the Form-5 has been filed each year.

Well Martin I think the Prineville RR could use another horse to pull the excursions!
She could even work freight as well, so those diesels could get some enginehouse time...........8>)

Her tubes were last done in 2006 so she has until 2021 before she needs to be re-tubed. In talking with some connections there are a few interested parties, including a couple in Yreka who are interested in purchasing the locomotive. This next month or so will be very interesting. We will see what happens.

I sure do miss working on the Yreka Western and the 19. Part of me hopes she stays in Yreka, but I would be happy to see her run at any credible operation if it comes to that. Attached is a photo of the last run of the 19 to date on Nov. 1, 2008 on a trip for the Pacific Locomotive Association (Photo by TO member roustabout). Pictured left to right is Steve Milward, Roger Titus, Tim Stricker, Court Hammond, Myself, Bill Ainsworth, and Dennis Woodruff.

Martin. What do you think it will go for at auction. Any big boys with lots of money looking at buying it ?
