Simpson Finale: A Ride and a Night Shot
Author: loleta

1, 2. Riding #900 on the rear of the morning log train, first at Carmen Road, then a mile or so east of the Dayton sort yard. With only one unit on the front and one on the rear, the train stalled on the grade west of Dayton - Airport Rd. and had to double the hill to the sort yard.
3. 1200 and 900 return to Shelton. I had to shoot this view about 20 times to get one shot wasn't blurred or cock-eyed from the rocking of the engines.

I have really enjoyed your series of photos and explanation of what goes on. I only live about an hour away but you hit the weather and had the perseverance to get a nice series...unlike me!

I'm not sure what it is. It may be some sort of speeder.

Nice shots. The roundhouse is outstanding!

The cab rides can be quite entertaining. Mine involved a helper move, with the locomotive I was riding on the rear. The crew seemed rather concerned for the speed at which we were crossing a particular section. I was pretty sure they were having fun at my expensive, but...

Correct, Loleta...that is their speeder. It's a wonderful cobbed-together sort of two level speeder with attached work equipment hauling section, welding tanks, etc. A real beauty that looks like it was put together by a modeler that cleaned up the parts box by gluing everything he found in there onto some spare trucks. I paced it out on their line before they cut-back the tracks and it was great fun to take it in. Maybe someone out there has photos of it.

By the way, your photos are truly excellent and I always enjoy them! Great Simpson coverage. Neat that the railroaders invited you onto the property.
