I remember Wasatch Railroad Contractors had the contract on that move. We went down to Omaha and helped nurse the loco out of Kenefick Park down by the river (and water treatment plant), and moved it over to the Burlington for movement to the new site on the hill overlooking I-80 and all. Unfortunately, that would not work very well in 4014's place what with it taking so long to move and all the highway permits you would need to have. Not to belittle shutting down the road you are on for the movement.

Good luck and safe journey gents.

Not to swing things too far off topic, but is that an air horn on the pilot to the right/engineers side of the headlight?

Cheers, Dave

Bob do you have any pics or videos of when you guys moved the 4023 out of kenefick park? I remember seeing videos on another site but the video quality was very very poor. Thanks

There were only about 300 people on that hillside including Bill,Anita and Kate Kratville. I also remember Mr. Kenifeck being there as well.
I have photos that look like that but it was before digital for me so they're all prints. I also have video of the entire clime up the hill the next day.

Curious as to why this Loco was not chose for restoration over 4014? Curious what was Ed's 2nd choice if the 4014 was not an option?

1) Although #4023 was probably in the best condition of any of the 7 other displayed 4000 class locomotives, she is now mounted waaaay up on top of the hill overlooking Interstate 80, in Omaha, Nebraska. The UP spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to move the 4023, her tender, and DDA40X #6900, thru city streets and up the hill to were they both are now displayed.

2) You would have to ask Ed what "the second choice was", if indeed there ever was a "second choice". It is entirely possible that the "secret, outside benefactor" specifically WANTED the 4014, anyway.

In an earlier thread when we were all trying to guess which Big Boy would be restored, one of the steam experts (maybe John Rimmasch from WRC) suggested that the easiest way to remove #4023 from its perch might be to just slide it down the hill-- really.

John is more serious than not. The grade on the backside where it came up is pretty wicked. It had to have been 15 percent or better.

Ed Dickens told me the 4014 was in the best condition for restoration among all eight.

Bob K., I believe the man with the contract to move the 4023 was the Mr. Scribs who owns the huge dolly assemblies seen in the first photograph. I was down watching them prepare the engine many times. Mr. Scribs (from David City, NE) was very nice and accommodating at all times, answering any question and explaining their processes and the operation of the dolly units. He let me take any photos I wanted. A really nice guy, who took the whole job in stride. I never saw the Wahsatch people, so if they did have anything to do with it they must have done it from afar.

I believe the photo of 4023 was taken by UPHS member Mike Connor of Omaha.

The "very, very poor" quality videos of 4023's move from the original Kenefick park as seen in another site are mine and I will apologize here for the results I was able to obtain with my old Sony "Mavica" floppy disk digital camera, my first.

John, do you have any more videos of its move from the park? Been dying to see some of my favorite Bigboy. Or does anyone have pics of its deadhead to Omaha in mid 70's?
