Todays UP 4014 pomona movements
Author: tc

First I would like to thank Rich (pasadena sub) for starting these posts, well today I was able to make it out to pomona to see if I could catch the bigboy on her journey to the north end of the fairground, well I made it and thought I missed everything because everybody was gone but little did I know they were out to lunch well with the slow in the action I figured I would get some static shots.

Well the crew made it back and the skys opened up. In the second shot the steam crew in the fourground work on track while the surveyors in the back line up the route to the metrolink , third shot is right after a cloud burst which gave some color to the scene

Well it was getting late and I had to get home so one last shot of the journey so far and I hope all goes well for the steam crew and the bigboy to a new home. I would love to watch them turn this in the corner but I think its time for me to work.

Great coverage, Tim. Glad you were able to make it out here for the move. Looks like they've reached the top end of the fairgrounds.

Nice catch with the rainbow! Did they mention if today was the last day of getting the 4014 into position before the big departure?

Rich

Wow look at that lean on the curve! Interesting to see. Thanks for the updates! Being trapped at work for 12 hours a day while this is all going on sucks.

A rainbow - of course! The more you railfan, the luckier you get.

Wonder who stayed home thinking - "I already got my shots".

Now - the only thing needed are some kids in the cab shouting:
"Are we there yet"

Thanks for sharing!

Aren't they going to remove the main rods for transit?

Jack?

Nope. That would leave the wheels unbalanced. The pistons have been removed so it's not going to damage anything due to lack of steam lubrication.

Over the parking lot and through the woods off Cheyenne I go.....Boy a bunch of hard work but they sure make it look easy. Thank you for the update and photos.

Is that graffiti on the firebox on the engineer's side in pictures 1 & 2? From your angle, it looks like it.

I don't see the graffiti, but I just noticed that the rain washed away the 'Big Boy' chalk scrawl that Ed Dickens did on the front of the engine.

So after all of this, they still have to use the poor man's turntable to get it lined up? That should be an interesting trick.

I would think that they are going to pull it tender first to Basset, then run "normally to Colton. No turning.

TC, great job on the photos. This fills in the missing link for all the photos I have taken over the last several days. I shot just about every phase of the move along with my son, Pasadena Sub but since he has the best quality photos between the two of us, there was no point in me posting any duplicates. A lot of credit is deserved by Ed and his crew for this outstanding move. Super Job!

Thanks to all for making the images available to all especially for us who live in other parts of the world and are fascinated by UP steam program.

Just takes time and effort...not unlike what they have been doing.

Thanks, Kurt, but I mentioned main rods, not side rods. The only reason I asked is because I don't remember seeing a locomotive being transported with the main rods attached. Not saying it didn't happen. Just saying I've never seen it. I'm not an expert on steam locomotives and don't claim to be. I just assumed they would be removed so there would be less items that needed lubrication for the trip.
