Where Was The Most Scenic Turntable Location?
Author: LoggerHogger

More often than not, railroad facilities including roundhouses and their turntables were located in the heart of cities on the "wrong side of the tracks" and were not very scenic. However there were some roundhouses and their turntables that were located in beautiful settings.

Here is my vote for the most beautiful location of a turntable, The McCloud River RR in McCloud, California at the foot of Mt. Shastaas shown by this photo taken by Richard F. Thomas.

What is your "most beautiful turntable location"?

I don't have a photo of it so share, but I'm thinking the Silverton Railroad's Corkscrew Gulch turntable must rate pretty far up the list of scenic turntable locations.

Either at the end of the Floresta branch, or even better, the one on the DSP&P outside of Elmo - pit still visible. I can think of no more scenic locale than a mile or so below Alpine Tunnel. Laws has a nice location, though the immediate area is less than scenic, the area beyond is beautiful. Also Hancock, and the table inside the enginehouse at Alpine.

For those who may not have seen the Corkscrew Gulch Turntable, here it is in service over 100 years ago.

Corkscrew: So instead of a switchback they used a turntable. Odd.

Scenic nomination: SP Santa Barbara, across the palm-lined street from the Pacific Ocean.

Corkscrew Gulch: It was a single switchback. If switchbacks are in pairs the train ends up going the same direction, but a single switchback reverses direction, so a TT was handy to keep the locomotive pointed forward. A decade ago I hiked to it from Red Mountain, a delightful walk in the woods many decades after reading about it in Beebe & Clegg's NARROW GAUGE IN THE ROCKIES.

Not exactly mentioned was the turntable on stilts just outside the west portal of Alpine tunnel. It's like you're at the top of the World.

I always liked the Western Pacific's turntable and roundhouse at Keddie. Not only a beautiful mountain location, but perched on a wide shelf of rock clinging to a mountain side.

I don't remember the railroad, but the one in Hawaii with a palm tree nearby.

Timber or Cochran on the S.P. Tillamook branch? I don't have any pix, but I've been told they were quite scenic!

You could also consider the turntable at Salmonberry. Here is a photo of it in service.

How about the turntable outside the east portal (north) of Tunnel 13 on the Siskiyous?

Beautiful view of the start of the Valley down below.

Although not in the U.S., I find this short of a switcher on a turntable in France kinda scenic. Notice it swings over a canal.

That opens to let canal traffic pass I believe though.

Here is an image of the turntable at the west end of old Alpine Tunnel, taken a dozen years ago. Very easy and really fun drive getting there from Gunnison.
