Steam & Excursion > UP 3105 question

I'm going to assume that the museum doesn't have plans to actually use 3105 as a operational engine. So why doesn't UP 'pickle' it for storage instead of hand over an operational unit? Fuel goes stale and may start leaking, batteries will die and start puking acid, after a few years the coolant will drill it's own hole out and leak. Seems like a better idea to drain all the fluids and set it up for long term storage. And so it can drive itself in is silly, since it will roll so much easier then a big boy that's sat up for years....

I've heard that the museum specifically requested the diesel be in operating condition as part of the deal for the 4014. That would make sense if the museum intends to fire up the 3105 when they are open for the public. Not possible if all fluids were drained.

Perhaps you should ask the museum folks what they intend to do with 3105, they seem to be forthcoming when asked questions.

Put in a circle of track around the perimeter of the fairgrounds and run a fan special ala Disneyland Railroad. Money maker??

You could very nearly do that without even destroying too much of the new landscaping. Probably cost a bit for track laying though.

That would be the ultimate kiddie park ride engine. HA!

You would have to get the Fairplex and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to buy in on this.
I suspect the amount of money they would want for this would make it a money loser for the NRHS folks.

It in not the NRHS it is the RLHS Rail Giant Museum.

Interesting. I just wonder if the "museum" has anyone "on staff" that knows how to pre-lube an EMD 645 engine, then "blow out" the moisture thru the cylinder test cocks, prior to starting the poor thing.

They should have a shelter for the 3105 to keep the sun and rain off it

I can't think of any reason why that's necessary in this climate. The great weather here no doubt contributed to the good physical condition of 4014. Besides, right now it doesn't seem like it will ever rain again here.
